Official opening of the Fort York Visitor Centre
The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will be joined by Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly, Ontario MPP Han Dong and Chief M. Bryan LaForme of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation to officially open a new visitor centre at Toronto's Fort York National Historic Site.
Date: Friday, September 19
Time: 1 to 3:30 p.m., remarks at 2 p.m.
Location: Fort York National Historic Site, 250 Fort York Blvd.
Note: At 1 p.m. media are invited to a guided tour of the visitor centre interior.
Events celebrating the official opening include performances by the Fort York Guard, the Kensington Horns, the Métis Fiddler Quartet and Red Pepper Spectacle Arts. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, there will be a cannon round firing from the Fort York grounds.
The visitor centre opening will herald a new era in the more than 200 year history of Fort York. Designed by Patkau Architects Inc. of Vancouver with Kearns Mancini Architects Inc. of Toronto, the centre's design received a Canadian Architect magazine Award of Excellence.
On September 20 and 21 the public are invited to a free weekend of performances and exhibitions under the name of On Common Ground in front of the visitor centre and inside the fort's walls. Five exhibitions will also open inside the visitor centre. More information is available at http://www.toronto.ca/fortified.

I attended the opening reception for the Visitor Centre this evening and took a few snaps. Overall I think the space is lovely, and it is the culmination of literally decades of effort and persistence bringing the facility into reality. The one part I had qualms about was the 'immersive ramp' in the 2nd level (unfortunately I didn't take a shot of it), but I don't think they've actually put the exhibit yet there so, we'll see.

A lot of landscaping and some of the exterior still have to be done. The centre is opening but there's still work ongoing scheduled for the next year or so. (the next big thing is removing the garrison road bridge).

Pretty cool space. It should look even better at night because the glass-clad tunnel above will be lit with LED lights. That, combined with the water table light feature under the Gardiner, will make for some really nice shots.

we look forward to visiting today. It would be cool if they could fit a precast or synthetic mold of soldiers around the Gardiner's concrete posts. Or perhaps some inflatables can be made to go around those posts that light up at night.

Great to see that they have highlighted such a prominent historic site in our city in this way! I hope this continues to bring our past to the forefront and serves as one of many focal points for tourists.

The architecture and materials are both excellent, but with the dirt wasteland in front it looks like the fort from Mad Max 2. 
Hope it looks nicer when they've finished everything. Maybe this and underpass park will set a precedent for utilizing the space underneath the Gardiner.

The bits where the landscaping is done under the Gardiner look fine. There's no reason to believe that the bits that are still to be landscaped won't also look fine.
Just to be clear, Underpass Park is not under the Gardiner. It is under the Richmond-Adelaide-Eastern Avenue bridges.
