Embleton Community Centre: a proposed 2-storey community centre and sports facility designed by Perkins&Will for The City of Brampton on the north side of Lionhead Golf Club Road, west of Mississauga Road in Brampton's Huttonville Bram West area.

Concepts from the Perkins&Will presentation last month:

From the looks of it, the Peel School Board wants to build said new high school right next to the community centre. The light purple area in the conceptual site layout is the proposed location for a high school that is intended to be finished by 2027.

I still don't understand the reasoning to delay Howden Recreation Centre with a finished design right now and could break ground early 2024 for Embleton which won't have a completed design until next year. Bramalea has seen nearly all of their public spaces torn down and downsized, decisions controlled by Councillors in other wards.

Project Overview:

A state-of-the-art, multi-use, multi-seasonal community centre designed with residents of all ages and abilities in mind. The aquatics centre will be equipped with a large leisure pool for lessons and recreational programming and an 8-lane lap pool designed for training and competitive use opportunities. The main floor will house a triple gymnasium, youth program room, and meeting spaces, all supported by an inclusive washroom and changing facilities. The facility will also have a leased space for a day care centre.

The second story will house a large-scale fitness centre, complete with an exercise studio, cardio, weight, and functional training areas; multipurpose meeting and program rooms, a large walking track, and seating overlooking program spaces on the main floor.

The outdoor amenities will include a variety of features including a pavilion for seasonal ice skating, tennis, pickleball, and multi-sport courts, a playground, and spray pad. These generous open spaces will bring the community together with ample parking and pathway and trail connections.

Milestones:
  • Q1 and Q2 2024: Detailed design
  • Q1 2025: Tender award target - We are HERE.
  • Q1 2025: Construction to begin
  • Q3 2026: Facility anticipated to be completed

Update per Bids&Tenders Brampton: The project bid has been terminated.

I imagine we'll hear more about this in the city minutes during a council meeting if not already discussed.

Update per Bids&Tenders Brampton: Construction Management Services for Embleton Community Centre

Reading through the bid document, the city has introduced a new section of the bid where the bidders will have to go into detail regarding their rationale for price increases for the U.S. tariffs. Essentially, the city was not anticipating the costs to be so high, but also want to see what each company is suggesting in terms of why the costs are so high.

In the new bid documents, the city has received information suggesting that the cost to build the community centre is around $110M. That includes the costs of construction, as well as payment to the company that will manage the project. There are no other funds for contingencies or cash allowances which is a little worrying.

The timeline appears to be approximately 3 years, with procurement starting in July of 2025, and total completion reaching December of 2028. Warranty should be around October of 2028 when substantial completion is anticipated.

Can't say I'm not surprised about the outcome, but it makes sense with all things considered.
