Toronto Eglinton Line 5 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Nov 16
Not sure what the headways was to be but it was 2-15 minutes betwebb LRV sets I believe the 15 minute gap had di to cars been short turn at Hemb as I saw one doing this on my return trip after shooting the video from the DVP to Kennedy.

Where I normal setup to shot photos I saw this happen with a westbound LRV set arriving at Hakimi station. What got me for that short turn was the LRV set only went westbound to Pharmacy station and then became an eastbound LRV set. When that LRV set that became an eastbound train and clear the crossove the other westbound LRV set sitting at the Hakimi station proceed westbound.

LRV short turn at Hakimi is now short turning at Pharmacy station

That’s very weird behaviour for something that’s supposed to be revenue service! Unless this is a special test needed to pass the week

Some observations about the little details from visiting the new concourse at Cedarvale on opening day:

General Observations:
  • Very clean with staff on hand to guide passengers
  • The trains were passing by frequently roughly every ~5 minutes or so
  • Automated announcements were playing announcing incoming trains on the Line 5 platforms
  • Heard a new beeping sound from trains when door opens that’s different from the chime used on streetcars.
  • Several retail storefronts in the concourse, hoping we can have some in station shops and food when the line opens
  • Washrooms located on concourse
Signage observations:
  • Signage is bilingual
  • Signs for Line 1 transfers still uses cardinal directions as opposed to the terminal stations - may get confusing with two different directional signs for Line 1 (IE, Line 1 North instead of Line 1 to Vaughan)
  • Exits marked with the green ISO “running man” signage instead of the red EXIT
  • Curious how the TTC will update the signage when wayfinding harmonization comes around or will it continue to leave the unique line 5 signage in place

Two different naming schemes. The Vaughan extension of Line 1 was a TTC project so it follows the TTC's preferred naming scheme. Pioneer Village for example was supposed to be called "Steeles West" and VMC was simply supposed to be "Vaughan Centre" until politicians started meddling.

Really, VMC should just be renamed "Vaughan Parking/Office Hell".

Also the TTC didn't want to have Downsview and Downsview Park right after each other due to possible confusion. The Crosstown is a Metrolinx project and they have their own naming scheme (which they don't follow sometimes) and for them they want stations to have unique and "meaningful" names. That said early in the project MX said they wouldn't rename pre-existing stations, yet here we are because once again they have a naming scheme which the paid some know-nothing consultant god knows how much money to create and then don't even bother to follow it.

If the Crosstown used the TTC naming scheme then Eglinton West would keep its name and Eglinton would become Eglinton-Yonge (which honestly it still should).

Yet, one of many reasons Toronto is better off if the province stays out of its business.

I suppose TTC won’t be maintaining the signage on the Crosstown stations. I do think this is a crosslinx job. They are suppose to provide janitors to maintain the stations too.

I noticed something like that too, when looking up station names for the Danforth expansion to Scarborough Centre, replacing the SRT, on TTC vs. Metrolinx maps.
1. TTC says Lawrence East (reusing a name from the SRT), Metrolinx says Lawrence & McCowan.
2. TTC says McCowan-Sheppard, Metrolinx says Sheppard & McCowan.

I have no issue with using intersections as station names (LA does this a lot) but it should be consistent. TTC was already using Sheppard-Yonge and Bloor-Yonge. I hate that Metrolinx used "Jane and Finch" as a station name which messes up the consistency. Nevermind the Eglinton disaster.

In terms of Lawrence East vs Lawrence & McCowan, I think the intersection is much more useful, but the naming scheme inconsistency with TTC usage drives me nuts.

I really don't think Metrolinx's quest for unique station names on local transit lines makes any sense. Buses don't have unique stop names--they just tell you what street the local bus is crossing, or sometimes an address.

Agreed. I find Metrolinx's insistence on 'neighbourly' names irritating and confuding, not to mention as you have, inconsistent. Ive never heard of Cedarvale until Metrolinx chose that name, and wuestion the use of their naming convention as opposed to say, street names and landmarks. The Aga Khan stop makes sense, as it applies to a local landmark, but say, Cedarvale or whatever Dufferin is called, does not.

They haven't changed St Andrew, Osgoode, or St Patrick to conform to that as a standard.

They were opened before the "West" for corresponding stations on the later Spadina line was a thing. The change to "Pioneer Village" was almost for sure a "confusion" avoidance thing.

I can see the short turn as part of the test but the double short turn was really wier.

Just a thought...
1. Starting yesterday, signage went up in Dundas Station to change the name to TMU, but the offical name change will supposedly happen next month.
2. Starting Nov 16, the process of changing Eglinton West Station to Cedarville officially began, although there is no official target date. Originally, the date was to be the same as Eglinton LRT's opening, but now it sounds like it may happen in advance.
3. Finch West LRT is rumoured to open Dec 7, but with that date coming closer but no official announcement, it's doubtful it will happen on that date, but it may still happen this year.
4. Eglinton LRT testing is vigorous, and although we expected it would not open this year, a spokesperson said he thinks it will happen, and it looks like they're still trying to get it ready.
So the thought is, perhaps they are planning to co-ordinate all 4 changes to happen on the same day? That would certainly make it easier to change all the route maps. Then they can put out a new Ride Guide; the current one is dated Summer!
