I don't think the federal government has ever paid for any of the capital costs in Toronto, until the recent Harper government did so on the Spadina extension.

Not to mention functional.

This is an interchange station. It should have the same name as the station it is interchanging with.

Anyone else see the ridiculousness of having two stations in literally the same geographic place with a directed interchange between them having different names?

Imagine if we called one of the platforms at Bloor-Yonge as Yorkville station, in addition to Bloor-Yonge.

Wait, is this what they're actually doing? I'd expect them to rename the subway station to match.

Reading the articles about this gives me the impression that they're renaming the YUS subway station as well, but they're not explicit.

And looking at the TTC's presentation material from last year before the names were finalized, it does look as though they would have the same name for the LRT and subway station:

Did anyone notice that the City Council transit vote included this amendment from Cho? "City Council direct the Chief Planner and Executive Director, City Planning to report...on the cost of extending the Eglinton Crosstown LRT from the University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus, to Malvern Town Centre."

This crosstown line...they just wanna keep making it longer and longer. Is there a point that it needs to be broken up or have more short-turns?

I can't really blame them for wanting to get the most mileage out of the Crosstown. The transit deficit, particularly in Scarborough, is such that any transit construction offering a one-seat ride right across the city (versus hours sitting on and transferring from one bus to another) can be seen as a marked improvement. The commute from UTSC or Malvern to Pearson today is atrociously long. There's simply no denying that something must be done to rectify that.

Except that the way the LRT is designed, it's meant more for local access and city building than for rapid crosstown commuting. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

If you wanted a more regional express line then Metrolinx's original concept, with an extension of the ICTS, is more appropriate.

At issue is Metrolinx planners' desire to scrap the TTC's proposal for a $2.2-billion partly tunnelled light-rail line on Eglinton Avenue and instead build something the TTC warns would be two to three times as expensive, such as a subway or a tunnelled subway-like system with vehicles similar to the Scarborough RT or Vancouver's SkyTrain.[...]

Metrolinx chairman Rob MacIsaac, the former mayor of Burlington, denies there is a "fight."

But he says something faster and with more carrying capacity than light-rail is needed on Eglinton - where subway construction was halted by premier Mike Harris in 1995 - especially if riders are to take it from Scarborough to Mississauga.

"If you're going to travel from one end of that line to the other, we think you'd probably better pack a picnic lunch," Mr. MacIsaac said.​

Crosstown East hasn't been designed that, so we can't say that. Crosstown West is planned to move a 30 km/h, the same speed as Line 1 and Line 2, both of which are built for rapid commuting.
 
On that note, does anyone here know when we'll see design options for Crosstown East? We've seen them for West, but nothing yet for East. Our Cheif Planner has already indicated they'll be signicant changes, particularly at Kennedy
 
Amendments are almost always made as one proceeds towards construction. The same happened with the Crosstown.

Yes amendments always happen. But the amendments happening to these are rather significant. This includes potentially cutting a signicant amount of stations, different degree of grade separations, and for the East, a redesign of the service concept to include through routing via ECLRT. When it's all said and done it'll probably look similar to what was in the EA, but signicant changes can and will likely be made.

I wouldn't be surprised to see stops cut from West and East, and some degree of grade separation for West (trenches under intersections have been proposed)

The amendment for the current Eglinton project already deals with the changes at Kennedy, leaving an alignment coming out of the proposed LRT for extension eastward.

I've seen no indication that changes stops or grade separation will occur. But that would require a simple amendment, like has been done elsewhere (i.e. Mount Dennis).

Though if they are just shifting a stop a short distance, or eliminating them entirely, I don't think they have to complete an EA. I don't recall an amendment to the Sheppard subway EA, simply because they decided not to build Willowdale station at that time.
