Toronto Eglinton Line 5 Crosstown West Extension | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

And Stephen Harper, a conservative, was in power at 24 Sussex until 2015.

Are you suggesting the only way to get something built is to have the city, province, and feds all either PC or Liberal to get something done?

Miller (left) McGuinty (left) Harper (right) = something happening

Ford (right) Wynne (Left) Harper (right) = Nothing happening

Tory (right) Ford (right) Trudeau (left) = Nothing happening

The province is where most transit planning and action actually happens. The feds simply give stimulus funds and the city makes up plans, but the real meat of any transit capital is from provincial leaders. They both have the actual jurisdiction to make things happen as well as the money.

With respect to politics, I think the feds are too far removed from Toronto to have much of impact. City and provincial ineptitude is probably more to blame than the stripe of the party in Ottawa. I feel like if the city and province are on the same page more or less and present a coherent funding ask to the feds, the latter would almost always grant it (exceptions notwithstanding).

Yeah, as we can see, the common factor is dysfunctional relations between the city and province.

If we could obliterate either the provincial or municipal government, things would go a lot smoother in this city

Ugh why cant politicians leave Metrolinx alone, like they leave MTO alone. The organization is completely and utterly dysfunctional
Because politicians for some reason think they're experts when it comes to transit, even though 95% of them dont use it.

They cant do the same thing with healthcare, law, education, science, etc because they'll get laughed out of the room. Those arent industries where you can come up with BS daily and get away with it because you'll get called out on it by industry leaders and professional associations. With transit, there's no real professional association with teeth that can actually hold them accountable.

At one point in history the TTC did a great job managing itself and expansion. Things started going downhill once the province got involved.

Good point.

Politicians can look like experts on transit simply by saying it should go where people in a particular area want it.

That's when Toronto becomes its own province. The municipal government and the provincial government would be merged in the province of Toronto.

The problem with transit planning in Toronto is that Torontonians keep voting for the bozos who keep scuttling each other's plans. So really Torontonians are getting what they pay for. I mean vote for. All Ontarians are expected to actually pay for the nonsense.

Only if they really leave MTO alone. MTO builds whatever the current government is funding and their priorities.

It would be interesting to compare how much navel-gazing and “studies completed but never actioned” there is at MTO. I bet there is just as much wasted planning effort and politically-driven priority shifting/reversal in road construction as in transit. We hear far less about that wasted effort in road building, but every new government does rearrange these plans . Many of the “next decade” highways ideas get their studies updated every few years, also, and as development doesn’t happen as once assumed needs do change.

Being a Ministry, and not a separate agency, they may be able to conceal all this planning better than ML can.

They sure do a lot of studies that never gets build in our lifetime. The new 4 lane expressway from North Bay eastwards to Mattawa is a good example. Proclaimed to be built in 20-30 years later. Of course this would only start after the finish with highway 69 which has been delayed numerous times. Maybe 2026-28 at this rate if they get a contract out soon.

By the time they actually want to build it, they'll need a new EA. The Bradford Bypass is another example of flopping around.

Certainly true but it is one thing Metrolinx could learn from is MTO's ability to run a study, put together a land purchase program, then shelve it for 30+ years.

Having a basic plan and land in place makes it go quite fast when a government is interested in funding construction.

Land purchase programs are often along the lines of paying a token amount for the option of first refusal or a life-lease. Basically, when the owner wants to leave, MTO is their first phone call.

...or longer. (From 2015.) See link. 2020-1972 = 48 years for these "airport" lands.

Any thoughts on Eglinton east of Kennedy and west of Mount Dennis turning into a BRT. Perhaps the Eglinton East LRT and West LRT are dead now?

East of Kennedy maybe, but I think the connection to Pearson is enough to push for the western extension to be LRT from the get-go.

I don't know how anything thinks Eg West is dead when Queen's Park is pushing forward to building it.

Eg West is nowhere near BRT ridership. It's best that they build something higher order to lure people from other corridors to using it. A subway is probably best for ridership and shifting demands from Line 2.
