Westside Story: Lots of progress this week. They are pouring P3 at the north-west corner as this was taken, and earlier they poured the up/down ramp from P2 to P1. There is a new style of forming happening in the two centre cores closest to Crane#2. Looking into both the open cores nearest to Crane#2 you will see a plywood platform that was constructed off-site and delivered in pieces. It was assembled by the crane. By zooming in you may be able to see the codes C6B1 or C5B1. There are large blue steel brackets that look a bit like a shelf brackets. There are three of these brackets exposed in the area near C4B1. These brackets are attached to the concrete wall and there are stretcher bars from one bracket on the north wall to the opposite bracket on the south wall. I have no clue why or what these are for other than they are in the same spot that the elevators will be located.

Eastside Story: They continue to work on the P2 flooring area towards the north wall. There is also a newly installed concrete pumping machine. Work on P1 will be coming to an end soon as construction moves towards Lake Shore Blvd next to 18 Yonge

Trackside: More steelwork was assembled last night, including some really fancy X wing supports between the steel beams, reminding me that it is May the 4th after all

Union Station East Rail Corridor
Daytime & Overnight Construction between Yonge Street and Cherry Street

Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a seamless, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Over the next 10 years, Metrolinx is transforming the existing GO rail system to deliver a whole new rapid transit experience to your community. With more frequent train service you’ll have more options to get you where you need to go.

Metrolinx is committed to updating our neighbours along the Union Station Rail Corridor about project developments and upcoming construction information.

THE LOCAL PROJECT
As we move into spring, work within the Union Station Rail Corridor is expected to increase based on permissible weather conditions. Metrolinx will be performing overnight construction work along the Union Station rail corridor, east of Union Station between Yonge Street and Cherry Street. Construction for the following projects include:

Signalling System Upgrade Project: Crews will be working on installing pull boxes, conduit and daylighting between Yonge Street and Cherry Street, into the Don Yard. This work requires excavation using a vacuum truck (there will be four vacuum trucks on site) and other required equipment. Noise-associated with this includes: drilling, hammering and back-up beepers.
This work will take place during the following period:

Tuesday, May 8, to Tuesday, May 15, 2018
During the day between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Overnight between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.


Don Yard Upgrade & Expansion Project: Track work will be taking place between Lower Sherbourne Street and Cherry Street, heading east into the Don Yard. Installation to replace the south corridor storage building will be taking place between Lower Sherbourne Street and Lower Jarvis Street. Noise associated with this work includes: drilling, hammering and back-up beepers, the equipment being used to conduct the work are: regulator, tamper, dump trucks, concrete trucks and a mini-crane.

This work will take place during the following period:
Tuesday, May 8, to Tuesday, May 15, 2018
During the day between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.


Rail Maintenance: Rail maintenance crews will be conducting track work at Cherry Street near the Cherry Street bridge. Various power, hand tools and welding equipment will be used. Crews will also be moving rail equipment and preparing materials in and out of the Sherbourne Yard, throughout the Union Station East Rail Corridor.
Tuesday, May 8, to Saturday, May 12, 2018
Overnight between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
During the day between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.


*Rail maintenance work is scheduled daily as part of our routine rail corridor state of good repair maintenance program to ensure safe and efficient rail service. Maintenance work includes: snow removal, removing and replacing rail ties and track bed, and picking up/dropping off rail equipment and preparing materials in and out of the Sherbourne Yard. General track maintenance work along the rail corridor is ongoing and is completed on a continuous basis dependent on track conditions. Inspectors are required to frequently walk-through the corridor, to point out potential defects in track conditions. When a point in the track is flagged, then replacement work is carried-out immediately. Track maintenance work is dependent on findings from the inspectors and permissible weather conditions.

WHAT TO EXPECT
We recognize that this work can be disruptive to residents and are doing our best to carry out this essential construction with the least disruption possible. We have directed our contractors to be mindful of our neighbours, and to redirect work lights away from homes.

Metrolinx uses typical rail equipment that has been fitted to comply with workplace health and safety standards. Each various piece of machinery used for our projects are measured in accordance with a precise test procedure that qualifies the equipment. Tracks must be taken out of service to complete this work and as a result this work can only be carried out during off-peak times for safety purposes, when there is less train traffic, overnight.

Nearby residents will notice loud noise and vibration from power tools and equipment movement during this time.

or probably from an engineering and safety perspective either (and why would you care, the supporting structure will be virtually invisible.)
cause it would have looked better and it will still be seen by those traveling the trains. So.

Or more visually pleasing. Why not make every visible place a “pleasing one” in a city such as this. I’d use the word stunning but that’s stretching.

To help a little with a visualization of the park over the tracks, I took a screenshot from Ivanhoe Cambridge 45 Bay project pages. The architectural drawing is looking towards the east along Bay St., shows the Gardiner on the left side. The visualized parking on the right side of the photo is presently the GO Bus Station

I'd really love to see more of these park connections over the tracks, even if they're not a full blown Rail Deck Park. The city could encourage the private sector to connect buildings over the tracks by giving then ownership of the parks and operated as POPS. A series of these could eventually be connected at little to no cost to the city.

The best example would be that of the SkyDome. The city could grant Rogers the land above the tracks from Blue Jays Way to John St, creating a private, but publicly accessible park where the Blue Jays could build a green space for fans to watch the games outdoors.

Front St. is going to be a hive of activity in the coming years with the Metro Convention Centre redevelopment, Oxford Place, Union Centre, the Well and the SkyDome reimagining all steadily progressing. There's an opportunity to give those developers the role of building over the rail corridor and then connecting all the pieces into one continuous park from around Yonge to past Spadina.

Exactly, the city should stay clear on trying to develop these rail deck parks,
i doubt they'll have the funds and if so it'll most likely be over budget and take forever to get built
