Toronto Bike Share

Well, @TwoWheelPoli ; Scott Collier out talking up Bikeshare yesterday said the report on the multi-year strategy will come to the December Board meeting not the next one.

The news came out, because the Green P agenda for October actually came out yesterday, a day early.

On that agenda is a report related to Bikeshare Toronto engagement meant to inform the next 5 years:

From the above, the first thing that jumps out at me is some Fibbing with a capital F.

1,042 stations huh? I have the real-time feed and I can tell you that there are 990 Bikeshare Stations at this very minute.

Where did this imaginary number come from.

The last official goal I saw was to hit 1,060 by year-end. So it doesn't match that either. I'll bet they've revised their year-end total down, as they are not pacing to achieve it; but decided to claim they've already met it. LOL

The Report identifies that Bikeshare could double annual ridership within 5 years hitting 16M rides annually.

Follow up to the above, remember I said that the Capital Budget submission should be on this month's agenda, it is.

The 5-year plan waits til next month.

But the 2026 budget submission for Green P is here:

The forecast details for coming year, however, as mostly blank:

Bikeshare is getting something, but the details are being held back:

52 in the shop for repairs [such as broken screens], stations for bike maintenance purposes like testing bike mount repairs, a few spares to replace broken deployed stations, and a few delivered but not yet deployed?

Some excerpts,

Just this summer, the Islands’ Bike Share program, which launched in May, has already netted the TPA $1.4 million.

“Two in every three people will pick an e-bike, if it’s available,” McDonald said. “And the e-bike has brought in new customers, new community members who didn’t think that bike share was an option for them.”

The nascent transit organization is drawing from across the world. Looking at New York, McDonald said Bike Share is looking at a replicating the “bike angels” program for the CitiBikes there, where users get rewards for redistributing bicycles from crowded stations, a problem that has plagued Bike Share as the trucks it currently uses, ironically, often get caught in traffic. He also looks to Montreal for inspiration, where cyclists can also rent out cargo attachments.

And Bike Share still has a ways to go to draw in ridership. Despite having a smaller population, Montreal, with its expansive bike lane network, is doubling Toronto’s ridership on its bike share system.

And also important to note they are a colder snowier city. Which is often brought up by anti-bikers as a reason bike lanes don't work in Toronto.

Bixi in Montreal used to shut completely between November 15 to April 15. Now they offer limited service, with 'winterised bikes'

This week's Economist has an article on cycling, behind pay wall but it starts ..

I was recently in Stockholm, a city with winters on par with Toronto's. It has bike lanes on basically every major street. It really puts the complaint that Toronto is building too many bike lanes in perspective.

I noted a massive drop in the number of Bikeshare Stations overnight and went to look at the Network Status Page.........

The Finch West LRT is the culprit, but I'm unclear on why exactly.

There is a note, but it doesn't really give useful detail:

A new station installed over the last week or so in the 95 Beecroft parkade.

Was this removed ? I don't see it on the bikeshare map, I thought it was a new station.

That Sentinel and Finch corridor trail station is now sitting at the corner of Dan Leckie and Fort York
