As @flonicky got me exploring aerial photos in the wee hours of the morning.....my attention migrated in one to the site of this development.......as it existed in 1960, 2 years before construction began on Line 2:

Orientation: The soccer pitch in the left of the image is still there today, in that exact spot as part of Dentonia Park, the road along its south frontage that zigzags is 'Denton' on its southerly leg. The lines running N-S across the centre of the image are the precise location of the future (not yet built) Victoria Park Avenue. To the right right of those lines, that copse of woods is this site. Note the creek flowing in the open through these lands, which I take it was piped as part of the subway project.

You'll note, in both images, what looks to be some type of path approaching VP station on the left; in the older image it continues on to the right/east, in the newer one, the subway is top of of it.

That is the former Canadian Northern Railway ROW, the tracks removed even by the time of the older picture, though the ROW is clear as day.

Today the ROW is a single-row Hydro Corridor and park pathway on the west approach to VP; and on the east, it is the subway corridor to just past Warden station above ground and is where the underground route to Kennedy also runs, along with the aforementioned Hydro Corridor.

At the time Line 2 was built, the GECO spur (CN Rail coming off the Stouffville GO of today) was active (as it still is, down to just north of Warden Station, where it diverts west to just shy of Pharmacy); but then, was also active south of Warden, but not in conflict with the subway route as it ran N-S just east of Warden Avenue.

But the combined traffic north of Warden Station meant putting the subway underground was deemed necessary. It would have to have been trenched anyway at major streets or used conventional railway crossings which would not have been desirable at TTC frequencies.
