Nothing wrong with background buildings, but this is a prominent corner. It deserved something a little more interesting.

Agree and even background buildings need to meet a minimum standard. Most of them fall short. This may have been acceptable in 2010 era Toronto but that's a pretty low bar.
 
Funny, I see the Y and I think Yes! What a nice way to open up the street corner and add a little flair at ground level. Of course, janky cladding could still ruin it aesthetically, and there's certainly grounds for pessimism based on what we've seen so far.
 
I do like the Y feature. The Y's surrounding space does in my opinion lighten up the SW intersection corner making the building not so overbearing. As for gas station cladding any newer Petro-can pump overhead structural awning seems in my opinion to have the edge here. Example NE conner Victoria Park and Ellesmere.
