Good point. It's not exactly on the same block, but directly across the street. Nelson St is small enough here that you could reasonably close it and have a large park run north-south here, provided you could effectively replace the fire station.

The parking lot has been fenced off now:

Looks like the future plan is to combine this parking lot on Richmond with the Fire station land on Adelaide:

Toronto moves to a more holistic approach to land and housing development

That outlook has been shelved, as have BuildTO’s more recent plans to sell off several choice commuter parking lots to developers. Instead, Mr. Johnston cites the example of an aging fire hall on Adelaide Street West, near John Street. CreateTO will build a new station on the Metro Hall lands and is combining the previous site with a city-owned parking lot immediately to the north, on Richmond Street West. Mr. Johnston says his planners are developing a precinct plan so whatever goes up on those now conjoined downtown lots will provide a range of amenities, including open space, a daycare centre, as well as a mix of housing types.

Sorry no earth-shattering news, but they do appear to be setting up some kind of huge beer garden here:

At least social distancing is being observed with the picnic tables being not too close to each other.

It would have been great if each table had a large parasol in the middle. Many beer garden tables have such parasols.

Temporary By-law under a Ministerial Zoning Order to permit an off-site restaurant patio

The city loves complaining about those MZOs but they are also relying on them a whole lot. First with the modular affordable housing and now this. Personally I think it's not a terrible approach to lean on them a bit more.

They've added a parasol to each table. The outdoor patio is a joint project by The Fifth Social Club and The Ballroom, who are neighbours to this space from both sides.

They are being well applied currently, but the danger is in the misapplication of them, and as the government gets more used to doling them out, we have to keep a watch on it so that it does not become an excuse to thwart the planning process for cheap partisan political ends/repaying their donor friends. I believe that environmental protections have already been threatened up in Springwater Twp. (north of Barrie) by an MZO that favours development in a sensitive area.
