The Toronto Islands

I took the opportunity yesterday to visit North America's largest urban car free community, the Toronto Islands.

One of the beaches on Centre Island.

This is the bridge over to Algonquin Island, which is where many of the residents live.

This is one of the many small streets leading down to the homes. At the end is a beautiful view of the skyline.

Back to the mainland, where parking is limited:

Maple Leaf Square and Telus once again.

great tour, a nice mix of skyline shots and rustic island homes! its been somewhere around 30 years since I've been out on the islands and even then it was just to go on the rides at Centreville. I really need to get out there this summer too!

Is the Shopsy's restaurant open now? It is supposed to be near the ferry docks.

I saw the signage for it, not sure if it was open yet, but I assume it is.

Great pics Marcanadian! We're lucky to have the islands and the island airport. I know some people will want to hang me for this but I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more development on the islands. Low rise stuff, 3 or 4 storeys, maybe a hotel, some seniors complexes, art schools, things like that.

Marvellous photos. How I loved Centreville as a child.

When I used to work at King and Bay, I would go over to Wards Island after work and walk to Hanlan's Point and back, twice (about 21 kms), take the ferry back to the mainland and walk home to Village by the Grange. I always fantasized about living there.

I have to say, though, that the Toronto skyline just isn't the same with the Royal York hidden behind condos.

If you look at it from the Port Lands area, you might see both the Royal York and Commerce Court North on the skyline.
