Sudbury 22 December 2023

Did they demolish the Superstack as well? I could not find any information online if that has happened already. I don't understand why the owner would go to the enormous expense to tear down such an iconic structure that symbolizes Sudbury. Is it at risk of tumbling over? If not just leave it as is just as today on the Toronto waterfront, we still have the smokestack for the long-gone Ontario Hydro Hearn Generating Station.

When the Superstack was built it was the tallest smokestack in the world and the second tallest freestanding structure in the western hemisphere and no doubt a symbol of enormous local pride. I can remember as a kid on trips out west with my family driving through Sudbury at night and from many miles away from Sudbury the Superstack stood out in the pitch-black night with its array of flashing strobe lights. It was a welcoming sight after driving for hours in what seemed like the middle of nowhere. With today's lighting technology the Superstack could be bathed in LED light in an ever-changing video display that could be a local tourist attraction (think Burj Dubai).

If the Superstack has not been demolished I hope they will consider other options. I doubt that it is at any risk of tumbling over any time soon and an implosion is out of the question so again, why spend what would be 100's of millions to take it down?
A quick look at the company site ( https://vale.com/sudbury-superstack ) says:
