Star's Jim Coyle on Sheppard Subway

Re: THE TTC SHEPPARD SUBWAY

Long Island Mike: There are a couple pictures of the Sheppard line at the following link:
www.urbanrail.net/am/toro/toronto.htm

There is talk about extending the Sheppard line to Scarborough Town Centre in the east and to Downsview station in the west. But who knows when that will happen (if ever).

Not just talk. I understand a good chunk of the engineering work had already been done with the original proposal with the intention of building it in the first place. What we got is a portion of the original plan.

There is no plan by the TTC to go West to Downsview. In fact, that specific proposal has been shot down by TTC several times. The ridership numbers aren't there for it.

Here's a PDF indicating the cost of Bessarrion was around $40M. I'm pretty sure it is closer to $80M including tunnel, track/crossover, etc.

Special trackwork document including tunnel elevations, connections to Yonge line, and cut/cover and tunnel diagrams:

The tunnel would be covered in the per km costs. Is there a crossover at Bessarion? Bessarion seems like a strange station to put a crossover at.

You're right. No cross-over at Bessarion. It's between Bayview and Bessarion but would have been in the Bayview pit.

The "per km" costs that reach the papers include station costs in them. I had understood the stations averaged $80M a pop and Sheppard was closer to $120M. Perhaps Bessarion was pretty cheap and Don Mills and Leslie (both larger cut/cover segments) were that much more expensive.
