Snacks: Rare finds, old favourites, flavours needed!

Now that I'm looking at this thread again........where's @evandyk been? He's supposed to be a regular poster in this and the what's cooking thread....
Holidays have kept me busy. I don't think I've been off work for so long since I took parental leave a few years ago! I haven't really been posting in any of the threads for a few weeks now.

But I did try both of these. Neither are anything worth writing home about. I have a bag of the Miss Vickie's chef series... the vodka sauce ones... which I will open when I finish the foccaccia ones, which aren't bad.

Good to have you back.

What do these actually taste like from your perspective? Clearly you're not super keen on them. But I'd be interested in the why.

Also where did you get them?

As to the Foccaccia ones, I tried those and I thought they were 'fine' but would rank well below my favourites ' Salt and Vinegar' and 'Spicy Dill'. Followed by regular which is good for flavoured dips.

I was out for a run yesterday and Lays were handing out sample bags (Masala, All Dressed, and another normal flavour -maybe sour cream and onion?) at Parliament and Mill streets. I grabbed the All Dressed, as I don't love the Masala and the other flavour. All dressed works in a way the other don't, imho, so I was happy.

They just tasted kind of vaguely "meaty" with a mostly sweet flavour on top of that for the Brazil one, and not much else for the Texas one. I got them from a convenience store on Bloor between Dufferin and Dovercourt. I think right across from the big church.

Ruffles All Dressed are probably my favourite "every day" chip flavour. The Lays ones just don't have enough flavouring powder on them to compete.

These were actually Ruffles All Dressed. Lays makes Ruffles... I wonder if it's the texture of the ripples that provides extra surface area for the seasoning?

Lays also controls Ms. Vickies, which has far more vibrant flavours.

Also worth saying, different regions flavour the same chips differently. Meaning BBQ flavour is sweeter in some markets, smokier in others and spicier in others. The same way Mexican Coke, U.S. Coke and Canadian Coke are all slightly different formulas.

But Ruffles All Dressed are miles better than Miss Vickies All Dressed Up.

Lays has been selling a non-ruffled All Dressed, and it's a shadow of the real thing.

Haven't tried either, that I can recall.

I don't mind all dressed, but to me

Ms Vickies Salt and Vinegar, followed by Ms. Vickies Spicy Dill Pickle are the top two in the market.

Their Jalapeno is also pretty good, if a bit one-note.

I like my favours bold.

I really miss having a good quality curried potato chip flavour, the Lays Masala one is ho-hum to me.

I used to really like the Thai one and the Korean BBQ one from Kettle; the use of a strong note of ginger was great.

After the above, I prefer plain, Kettle-style chips, which I can dip, into Mad Mexican Guac, or Pico, or a homemade dip like my smokey ancho aioli .

I don't doubt ya.

Try the Doritos Masala...

As for Salt and Vinegar, the Miss Vickies ones are definitely the top of the heap, followed by the Ruffles ones (which you can't always get), then the Old Dutch ones. Lays normal salt and vinegar are good, but not nearly as good as the others I mentioned.
Miss Vickies has such good flavors. I need to buy another bag eventually.

If you like kettle chips, Metro has their Irresistibles brand on sale starting with the new flyer effective tomorrow.
I know they are certainly not the best, but they are selling them for $0.99 for a 150 gram bag.
They'll probably get cleaned out pretty quick from the shelves. Good to stock up on for the back of the cupboard.
