Simons

I'll plunk Retain-Insiders new story on the Simons at TEC here:

Three pics, for the rest, follow the link:

This was my first time ever at Simons despite hearing about them for... years (decades??) Now I know what the hype is about and I'll be shopping here frequently. Not a fan of the crowds but I'm sure that'll die down once the novelty is gone. I did notice that there is no Simons café Ève. Isn't that a signature component of their stores?

It feels like it could've used a little more space, felt a little cramped... which is kind of ironic since CF had to work with 3 retailers to fill Nordstrom's space.

The first two floors were cramped. The third floor actually felt kind of spacious.

I've heard that since the pandemic that the cafes have been less of a thing sadly. When I lived in Ottawa I always thought it was a cool inclusion to the store.

But overall, very happy with this store! I went in on Thursday, it was busy so I'll wait week or two before I actually go shopping but like I cannot say enough how much I missed Simons after leaving Ottawa. It's nicer, more stylish clothes than anyone else offers at that price point (for the Le 31 stuff at least).

I also think it's notable that Uniqlo reopened their newly renovated store the following day because Simons is probably going to be a significant competitor to them given Simons' house brands often operate at similar price points.

I checked out the Eaton Centre Location, and it was a zoo. Like Boxing Day crowds. I was a bit underwhelmed. The men's section felt very cramped, certainly much more so than Nordstroms felt. Clothing was also an odd mismatch of expensive and somewhat affordable, but certain brands would get maybe a tiny rack. I don't know, it just felt like a slightly nicer version of the Bay on Queen St.

Yeah, a bit too busy to enjoy the shopping. I did buy a couple things on Friday and Saturday but I’ll hold off on a more substantial shopping for a week or two.

I disagree that the merch is akin to Hudson’s Bay. The clothes are quite nice and typically affordable. The expensive stuff is around the Hugo Boss wall in it a more isolated space.

Just from the pictures it looks a lot more cramped than the Square One location. But I guess the Ste-Catherine Street store is relatively cramped too. Will have to see how it feels in real life when I finally go there.

It's more cramped then Square One, but less cramped then Yorkdale. The Yorkdale one is very, very cramped.

Lots of fast fashion junk at Simons. My Le 31 dress shirts didn't even last a year. If i wanted fast fashion disposable junk, i would have gone to H&M. I paid $100 dollars for the shirts. Don't ever pay full price, wait for sales. If you care about quality dress-wear like me, wait till Holt's or Harry Rosen has sales. You can find some amazing deals.

I miss Hudson Bay's house brands like Hudson Room and Lord & Taylor's house brand Black Brown. Those were quality dress shirts and made to last.

Damn, I just bought two dress shirts from there... what happened to them? Did you dry clean them?

Absolutely agreed about Hudson Room and Black & Brown. In retrospect I should have bought more but I went up a size during COVID...

I don't dry clean my shirts, only black shirts and my sport coats/suits i get professionally cleaned. The Simons shirts didn't hold up. My one shirt is that vision "recycled cotton" it was like wearing sandpaper.

Hudson Bay had some of their cashmere sweaters on sale a few years ago, i bought four of them, i went back the next morning to get some more, they were sold out! They are fantastic to wear in the winter, they keep you warm and you don't sweat in them.
