President Donald Trump's United States of America

If I were John Oliver, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, or Jon Stewart right now, I'd be VERY worried...
Worried means capitulation here. I don’t think these guys do capitulation. Can’t say the same thing for their hosts though…

lawsuits against the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and 60 Minutes, extorting settlements from CBS, ABC, and others, blocking the AP's access to the White House, and forcing CBS to cancel Stephen Colbert as well

Jimmy Kimmel has had his show cancelled after Trump and his FCC chair threatened ABC

Stephen Colbert ❌
Jimmy Kimmel ❌
Seth Meyers ⚠️
Jon Stewart ⚠️
John Oliver ⚠️

Personally, I think John Oliver will actually be deported back to Britain.

Does anyone under 40 still watch late night tv?
Yes. And given their viewership and the type of content, I would argue that late night shows have done a hell of a lot more to stand up to MAGA and erosion of democracy than the so-called mainstream "news" outlets. These comedy shows actually call out trump administration for all the horrible things they are doing, while the so-called mainstream "journalists" play patty-cakes and pretend that false equivalency neutral reporting constitutes good journalistic practices.

Remember when Republicans were against cancel culture? Now they are the ones pushing it. What a bunch of hypocrites.
Republicans have never been against cancel culture. They love it as much as anybody, as long as it's people they don't like being canceled. Remember the Dixie Chicks?

In real time? The audience has declined considerably. But a lot of it does get viewed on Youtube or other social media the next day or within a week.

The shows are definitely less profitable than they were a few years ago, but most still make money.

Oliver has US citizenship. The deportation (and thus revocation of citizenship) of someone of that level of prominence could cause an international incident and go a long way to destabilizing Hollywood more than this administration already has. Not that I wouldn't put it past them, but they've yet to have that level of brazenness.

Even then, they could just likely strong-arm Discovery CEO David Zaslav into dropping Oliver's show lest they investigate Warner Brothers for tax fraud (some of the stuff Warner has done has been suspect, to say the least).

Actually there is a significant difference - by using the apparatus of the state (e.g. FTC) to compel networks to do so under implicit threat. I don't think cancel culture ever went that far.

It meant something these days?

I joked with my father this morning about how Jimmy Carr may yet be banned from entering the US. He is known for his offensive jokes.

Trump floats pulling licenses if networks are ‘against’ him after Jimmy Kimmel suspended

President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested that the federal government might revoke the licenses of broadcast television networks that are “against me.”

Trump’s comment came a day after ABC suspended airing the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” show because of comments its host made linking the alleged killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk to Trump’s MAGA movement. “There is a license. I’ll give you an example,” Trump told reporters. “I have read someplace that the networks were 97% against me, again, 97% negative, and yet I won and easily, all 7 swing states,” the president said, referring to his 2024 election win. “They’re 97% against, they give me only bad press. They’re getting a license,” Trump said. “I would think maybe their license should be taken away,” Trump said.

He can try but that would likely be considered a violation of the 1st amendment.

This is exactly how things went down in Putin's Russia 25 years ago. We know what that was a prelude to.
*quietly looks for tickets off this planet*

With all branches of government including the supreme court stuffed with yes-man loyalists, you really think anyone gives a damn about the constitution anymore?
