As a child, my father would take me on that ride to a shipyard at the foot of Spadina to see the launchings of Minesweepers during WWII.

Before my time, by a few decades; incredibly interesting.

So I went looking for info.

Here's some material on that:

I believe this may be a picture of yards in question, but can't be certain:

An older fibreglass cabin cruiser was abandoned this winter in one of the coves of Humber Bay Shores Park. It was moored to the dock by the boat ramp, for those who know the area. My son who is in the boat business predicted, rightly, that a fibreglass hull would not withstand the ice. The boat sank, gunnels awash, sometime in the last few days.

The authorities turned up this morning with a mobile crane, a flatbed truck and a posse of workers. Two of the workers went into the water to slip slings under the hull, surely an unpleasant ask in this weather. Everything now being shipshape and Bristol fashion, the crane raised the craft and laid it on the flatbed truck.

Here are some photos from our windows. I apologize for the quality. They were shot with an iPad at maximum digital zoom. (Note: the first shot in the series is actually the third photo here.)

Humber Bay Park. The gate in the photo blocks kayak or canoe access from the mouth of Mimico Creek to a large pond which is the habitat of many waterfowl in warmer weather. Right now the pond is chiefly the habitat of skaters.

Toronto Fire Services Personnel were carrying out an ice and water safety and rescue exercise today. The firefighters would walk to the edge of the open water and bounce until they broke through the ice. In one shot you can see the trainee in mid plunge. The instructor would shout ”Roll” to those regaining the surface of the ice. they then crawled back to the group. I guess the main thing is to spread one’s weight and to avoid standing up prematurely.

I thanked the squad leader for their excellent work in a quiet moment before the actual exercise.
