I am all for helping everyone but 22 billion dollars is alot of money.

At what point do we say sorry but this isn't sustainable anymore and redirect funding to domestic issues?

Russia is a strategic adversary and competitor in the Arctic. Not to sound mercenary, but Ukraine wearing them down (with their blood, mind you) is easily worth $22 billion to us. Probably actually an order of magnitude or more.


We're also in the middle of trying to run away from the US as fast as possible. Integration with the European defence ecosystem will require a commitment to European defence; no doubt, someone in Brussels, Paris, and Berlin is watching our every move. On foreign policy, we have a bad record of putting our money where our mouths are - this is a great way to help a sovereign nation defend against a larger neighbour trying to conquer it (sound familiar?), integrate with European defence, and defeat a strategic adversary at a much lower price than I think anyone anticipated in 2021.

This is the Hungarian in you. Exorcise it. Russia will never be defeated unless Putin genuinely fears our resolve. And honestly $22B would not be a high price to pay for that. So $2B is just fine.

I'm with you on this. It made my blood boil seeing that Carney has given Zelensky another $2.5 billion in addition to the $22 billion already funneled to Ukraine.

Canada's is bleeding out as a result of Trump's declared war on our economy, and Carney considers sending billions to Ukraine that we do not have as a priority. A few days ago, a 44-year-old Calgary man died waiting 8 hours in emergency to be seen by a doctor. Imagine what an infusion of $24.5 billion into our healthcare system would do to improve healthcare for Canadians. Imagine how many affordable homes could be built with the same amount of money.

On a per capita basis Canada has funneled way more money to Ukraine than even the Americans (I suspect Chrystia Freeland is the cause of this). The US has allocated $182.8 Billion in funding to Ukraine but have only disbursed $83.4 billion so far. In the case of Canada our taxes are going to buy American made weapons at a time when Trump has declared war on our country. We are shooting ourselves in the foot.

If Canada was a serious country, there would be widespread outrage over this but even the opposition parties are silent. There hasn't been a peep out of Poilievre, and I doubt he will object. Of course, there is no discussion in the media about the merits of draining tens of billions from our treasury at a time when Canada's very existence is being threatened like never before.

I saw a clip with Carney and Zelensky and Zelensky mentioned something about buying air defense systems with our money. No doubt from the Americans. Canada does not even have air defense systems which are the most important weapon system for the defense of a country. Canada is not a serious country.

No, it isn't. Not only would Canada be at war with Russia (how do you think that would turn out) we would be sending Canadian troops into a meat-grinder. and what for? Canada needs to wipe our hands of this war. Ukraine is not our problem. We have more than enough problems at home to take care of.

No.. it's the realist in me.

22 billion dollars since 2022 could have gone a long way towards rebuilding our economy and fending off Trump.

Our debt is in the trillions, our cities and provinces are underfunded.

This war will go on for years, if not decades. At some point we need to call it a stalemate and move on.

With all due respect, we need UBI and social programs to get people the support they need. We don't need to continue fighting a never ending proxy war in Ukraine while people here can barely afford to make ends meet.

Tell the mother using food banks that it's more important to spend 22 billion dollars on Ukraine than to feed her family. Watch the reaction you get.

Likewise for me. Too much generational trauma in my family with having Russia as a neighbouring country. It is not understood well enough in western countries that leaving Russia alone does not mean that Russia will leave us alone, even in Canada. They will invest heavily to destabilizing our country and propagating distrust in our institutions, democracy, and the western-led liberal world order - which we as Canadians benefit greatly from economically, politically, and socially through our respect for civil rights and freedoms. If Russia is given a moment respite, they will also double-down on the Arctic coming into direct conflict with Canada's sphere of influence there. Every dollar used to counter Russia's influence on us and our allies and bog down their attention in Ukraine is money well spent.

All the better if we can claim it as part of our contribution to reaching NATO 2% targets for spending.

$22B won't pay for a full subway line in Toronto. How much is the Ontario Line coming in at? So let's quit with the hyperbole on that money "rebuilding our economy and fending off Trump".

And if you think that's expensive, wait till you see what it costs when Russia wins in Ukraine. We'll have to increase the defence budget by that every year. We're already going up by $9B this year to reach 2%.. At least aid to Ukraine counts towards the target. The next NATO target is 5% with 3.5% on core military spending. That's defence and related infrastructure spending going up to $155B per year. That target is substantially driven by the threat of Russia. Are you now going to argue that Canada should quit NATO next?

The sooner Russia suffers strategic defeat in Ukraine, the sooner we can reduce defence spending. Some of you have forgotten that the post-Cold War peace dividend (which every Millennial takes for granted) happened because the Soviet Union ended.
