PM Mark Carney's Canada

Carney just guaranteed that no AI data centers will be built in Canada. Great job, Mark!

Seriously, I question whether Carney is deliberately trying to destroy the Canadian economy? After all, this is the guy who presided over the move of Brookfield, once one of Canada's premier companies, to New York. One thing is for sure is he is not working for Canada.

Also, at the G20 in Johannesburg, Carney said Canada will resume trade discussions with the United States "when it's appropriate," noting he did not have a pressing issue to address with President Donald Trump.

Carney has no pressing issue to address with Trump? Canada's economy is bleeding out under Trump's economic war on Canada. By Carney's own admission, Canada has already lost 1.8% of its GDP or $50 billion thanks to Trump's tariffs. I would call that a pressing issue. I wonder how Doug Ford would feel hearing that as the lifeblood of Ontario's economy - the auto sector - is being stolen out from under us?

How does it affect the average Canadian? Median GDP per capita is a measure of income, i.e., a measure of how much money Canadians have to live on, and relative to the United States, we have been losing ground over the last 10 years in a very big way. It is a hugely important figure for Canadians to focus on.
Do you mean median income? GDP doesn't measure income, but total economic output. So you cannot break it down like that. Even per capita GDP is not a measure of incomes.

Also, I have never heard of Median GDP statistics before. Median gross domestic product?

Of course, I mean median income.

You say:

GDP doesn't measure income, but total economic output. So, you cannot break it down so simply. Even per capita GDP is not a measure of income.

GDP per capita is an actual measure of individual income. Can you name any other metric that captures the wealth of individuals regardless of where they live? I can't

No, it does not measure income. It is simply the gross domestic product divided by population. If GDP does not measure income, then neither does GDP per capita. Wealth inequality can make it a misleading statistic.

I'm not saying it does not measure the wealth of a country. But you are arguing something different and misunderstanding the statistics.

If you want to know about the income of individuals then you can read the median income statistics from Stats Canada.

About that source:

Disclose.tv is a disinformation outlet[8] based in Germany that presents itself as a news aggregator.[2][6] It is known for promoting conspiracy theories[14] and fake news,[20] including COVID-19 misinformation[3][2][6] and anti-vaccine narratives.[23]
The website was created in 2007 as a conspiracy forum focused around content such as UFOs and paranormal phenomena. In 2021, it rebranded itself as a news aggregator on its social media platforms and website. Disclose.tv pushes far-right content, conspiracy theories and misleading information together with real news taken from other sources frequently without attribution, and platforms hate speech, including Holocaust denial and neo-Nazism, on its message groups.[2][6][24][13]

Boomer brains really get cooked on social media. Zero media literacy apparently.

^Er...so what is the GDP of Russia and China then? Would their living standards be better than us if it was higher?

GDP is a pretty useless standard by which to compare, anyway. Happiness and fulfillment in life can be sought after and attained without looking at life through a neoliberal, capitalist lens. Simply a standard to make wealthy enclaves look enticing.

Particularly nuts to complain about imposing carbon neutrality on data centres in Canada, you know the country with one of the lowest emitting grids in the world. Not to mention that data centres benefit from colder climates.

If there's universal carbon taxes on data centres, northern Quebec, BC and Manitoba would become global powerhouses. Possibly Nova Scotia too with their proposed wind plan.

But of course, the Boomer watching far right misinformation doesn't understand modern energy geopolitics and doesn't like policies that impede trade with China and Russia.

A couple things:
  • This is just a speech, not government policy
  • Canada's electricity market is largely decarbonized
  • Canada's electric rates are relatively low. Carbon credits for embedded carbon in electricity would not be material in the business case for an AI data centre
  • Many data centre operators are committed to carbon neutrality.

The PM is signaling that the "sunny ways" of his predecessor are over: feminist foreign policy, one of the hallmarks of the Trudeau era is being dropped.
