Official UT World Cup 2006 Thread

Without Italians moving all over the place, there would probably have been no Roman Empire!

"Wood-a-bridge-a Victor!"

There's an "Appian Way" near the intersection of Islington and Rutherford. Being a cul-de-sac, it does not, however, lead to Rome.

That would've been cool with Italy and Portugal, two of the largest immigrant groups in Toronto, pitted against each other.

I'm cheering for Italy, the underdogs. Go Azzurri!

I don't like that Ronaldo kid, (though he ain't bad to look at).

I'm happy to see the host country take third, and those crybaby Portugal players end up 4th.

I wonder how the media in Portugal covers their team. Do they cheer, or jeer them for their behaviour and antics?

10 minutes into the match, Zidane scores on a penalty kick.

Materazzi scores off a corner kick.

After extra time: 1-1

Next: penalty kicks

Italy wins after penalty kicks.

I made jam early this afternoon ( 4 1/2 litres of redcurrant + mulberry, that set nicely! ), then I went downtown about 3 or 4 o'clock. The streets were deserted. People were clustered around TV sets in the Eaton Centre, and here and there in the underground city. I felt like the invisible man as I walked past them unnoticed.

Zidane you idiot; what a disappointing end to such a magnificant career. What a terrible day all around.

Viva Italia!

I missed the game and had to watch it on replay. Coming home from Lake Simcoe I was careful to avoid the radio, but damn that one fan waving a giant Italian flag from their car window and tipping me off to the outcome.

Enjoy the party everyone!

What a final.

Zidane ... no words to describe the incident, other than pure stupidity.

I watched it at the SkyDome.

Surprisingly, despite that the ratio of French to Italians in Toronto is like 1:300 the majority of fans @ the Dome were French. I figure that it's because Italians have 2 party centrals (St. Clair and College St) whereas the French have no real French part of the city.

The game was nailbiting and it was great to watch it on the Jumbotron.
