Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 (nCoV-2019)

Go tell that to the health care professionals.

I'm actually in regular contact with many, a very good friend works at UHN.

I don't understand what sounds like a hostile response.

I'm all about the facts.

I'm not diminishing the seriousness of Covid in the least.

I'm simply sharing the science.

More numerical literacy issues.

From the article PinkLucy posted:

"During the week of Nov. 29, the positivity rate among children between the ages of four and 11 was 5.22 per cent, after 580 children tested positive for COVID-19. By the week of Dec. 27, the province recorded a 116 per cent increase in the positivity rate among the same age group, jumping up to 15.66 per cent, with 720 positive cases."

-That means 580 kids tested positive on 11 100 test on Nov.29th ( positivity rate of 5.22 percent)

-That means that 720 kids tested positive on 4600 tests on Dec.27th (positivity rate of 15.66 percent)

Ford is making the talking point (supported by the Teachers union) that the large case positivity increase makes schools un-safe to resume: however, this is a questionable narrative. What parent is going to take their kid in to get tested for Covid-19 over the holidays unless they have serious symptoms? That's why you saw a drop of 50% in the number of tests conducted. Taking your kid to get tested sucks. I know from experience. You're not going to take your 4-year old to get tested for the same runny nose over the holidays if they are isolated at home anyways. Your only going to take them in if they have a fever or serious cough.

The worrying trend is that an additional 140 kids tested positive when comparing the numbers: however, this is just reflective of the overall increase in community cases it has nothing to do with the 4-11 age cohort specifically.

Israel still world’s best for vaccination, but now among worst for contagion

Per capita, Israel state has inoculated 10 times more of its population than the US, but its mushrooming new outbreak is worse than America’s, and most everybody else’s

From link.

While Israel continued to lead the world in coronavirus vaccinations per capita by a wide margin, data showed Wednesday that the Jewish state has now passed the United States in new daily cases per million people on a seven-day average.

COVID-19 are at record high levels in many countries, in part due to new, more infectious mutated strains first identified in the UK and South Africa.

In Israel, the Health Ministry said Wednesday that 8,175 new cases were confirmed on Tuesday, the second day in a row where the number top 8,000. The record was 9,013 on September 30.

In the United States, the daily average of new cases over the past week has been 219,252 — some 100 less than the all-time record reached last month.

The US has a population of some 328 million compared with Israel’s 9.29 million.

Only very few countries have more daily cases than Israel, including the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and Slovenia, according to the Our World In Data website.

Meanwhile, Israel has vaccinated 15.83 percent of its population — some 1.5 million people — while the US has inoculated only 1.46% of its population, according to the same website.

Israel leads the world by far in that category, followed by two Gulf countries it recently normalized ties with, the United Arab Emirates (8.35%) and Bahrain (3.75%). The world average is just 0.19%.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 4.8 million vaccines had been administered in the US by Tuesday morning out of more than 17 million delivered to its various states. That is probably an undercount because of delays in reporting, but it is far fewer than experts had hoped.

The slow pace is frustrating health officials and a desperate public alike, though disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday that the US could soon be giving at least a million COVID-19 vaccinations a day despite the sluggish start.

Israel only started vaccinating on December 20 (a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu became the first vaccinee), with a focus on healthcare workers and then on over-60s and at-risk sectors. The US began its drive on December 14.

The infamous Hospital CEO would get a 1M payout (24 Mos.) pay if fired. (unless the vacation was deemed cause') that, sadly, seems unlikely since his vacation was 'approved'

I don't think contracts in the private sector should have 'golden handshakes'; and sure as hell not the public sector.

I don't mind reasonable severance.

But 24 months pay when your a high six-figure staffer is excessive in my judgement.

I would like to see a law capping severance either in total amount or in total weeks for any worker earning over 200k (index that sum to inflation)

I'd be okay with a cap of 12 months or 500k, the lesser of the two.

Glad to see the name Czechia being used more and more.

I spied that little exchange in the other thread way back whenever.

As a somewhat local I can tell you that the people there aren't too keen on it themselves. But they grumble about everything and are probably just apathetic about it whilst making a point of saying how much they dislike it.

I also prefer it myself. Lines up with the Slovaks.

The positivity rate of 12-13 year olds is 20%. https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-...3xb0CeVReTXU2sxHmFvs8Vyyf1xLJ-GPsFVd_aT906Yb0

But ... “The Ford government continues to insist that schools are not a source of transmission, despite the increase in positivity rates taking place while students were still in school.”

To be honest, the damage done long-term by having young kids away from peers and away from proper education is a much larger danger to the wellbeing of our society than this virus could ever hope to be.

Not sure how this should be handled, but you can be sure that a lost year of socialisation and education for certain age groups is a life-long intellectual and psychological handicap.

Is it a worthwhile tradeoff?

(Never mind the long-term psychological damage done to children stuck in abusive homes....we need not even go there because the damage from that blows some stupid virus clear out of the water)

Am I high or is 15.66 not actually a 116% increase from 5.22.

5.22 x 1.16 = 6.05 + 5.22 = 11.28

5.22 x 1.16 = 6.05 + 5.22 = 11.28

I lack sufficient information to ascertain the state of your impairment.

However, the original math is wrong..............

And yours is weird. LOL

1.16 is a 16% increase

A 116% increase is 2.16x

But that number would not get you to 15.66

Which can easily be ascertained to be exactly 3x the original which is 200%.

Yeah, and 2.16 x 5.22 is? ;)

Yeah, I guess the way I think is strange.

In any case, it's 11.28 and not 15.66 or it's not a 116% increase.

Unless the original was written by one of these children who have been out of school for months now, in which case....

(a 16% increase plus the original number itself again is 116%....just saying :p )

So, last night I was checking into a hotel because I'm working out of town. (Settle down, I'm "essential"....mostly to myself, but apparently to the rest of ya as well). A lady walks in and stands well behind me as I'm signing paperwork stating that I don't have a fever and etc. As I finish up, I turn to go back to my car to grab my bags and walk by her......as I approach her vicinity, you know, a good metre away or whatever....she starts spraying a mist all over herself and me as if warding off a spirit-ghost-vampire-boogabooga.

I think it may have been disinfectant. You know, for the virus flowing out of my pores. Stupid lady did far more potential damage to herself by spraying ethanol in her eyes than my voodoo energy could ever do.

You see, she's a fine example of the absolutely hysterical and ridiculous Dark Ages response some people have had to the plague. Absolutely bereft of any knowledge of even basic biological concepts.

And now, Doug Ford is musing a curfew. Because viruses only go out at night. Never forget that.

What exactly is the point of universal basic education if nobody is learning anything? Asking for a friend.
