Dawn Wells, Mary Ann on 'Gilligan's Island,' dies of COVID-19 at 82

Dawn Wells, best known for her role on the classic sitcom "Gilligan's Island," died Wednesday from complications related to COVID-19. She was 82.

Wells, who played the girl-next-door castaway Mary Ann in the long-running show, was a familiar face to millions of Americans.

The show ran for three seasons but is still airing on television worldwide in more than 30 languages.

Wells appeared on more than 150 TV shows as well as seven films and has starred in over 60 theatrical productions across the country.

A native of Reno, Nevada, Wells was Miss Nevada in the 1959 Miss America pageant.

The UK’s Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip will not get preferential treatment, but will instead “wait in line” during the first wave of the Covid-19 vaccines reserved for the over-80s and care home residents, a media report said citing sources.

The Daily Mail report on Saturday came after the UK on December 2 approved the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine on independent advice of its medicines regulator.

The vaccine will be made available across the UK from next week.

Care home residents, health and care staff, the elderly and the clinically extremely vulnerable will receive the vaccine on priority basis.

Operation Courageous, the country’s biggest ever mass vaccination programme, will swing into action on Tuesday with most of the 50 hospitals that have received the vaccine by then giving injections.

The sources told the Daily Mail that the Queen, 94, and the Duke of Edinburgh, 99, will be eligible for the vaccine within weeks and “have already accepted the offer on the advice of their doctors”.

“Public health experts believe that if the couple go public about the jab, it could go a long way to combating misinformation spread by conspiracy theorists which, it is feared, could lead to a substantial proportion of the population refusing the vaccine,” the newspaper report said.

According to the Daily Mail, discussions were also underway about the potential roles that could be played by Prince Charles and Prince William in publicizing the vaccination programme.

But courtiers are concerned that doing so might be seen as “politicising” the family, as well as amounting to an invasion of their medical privacy.

The younger royals, including Prince William and Kate Middleton, won’t be in line for the jab until later in 2021 when it is expected people in their thirties will begin being vaccinated.

While Downing Street has declined to comment on whether the Queen would be receiving a vaccine, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said on Saturday night: “Medical decisions are personal and this is not something we will comment on.”

The news report comes as an additional 15,539 people in the UK tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, increasing the country’s overall caseload to 1,710,379, according to official figures.

The death toll in rose by 397 to 61,111.

Looks like Ontario made the right move. Mother nature will take care of the tobogganing hills this week.

Germany now solidly past 5 x first-wave peak which gives me confidence to expect Canada will soon top 10,000 cases a day (our 5 x peak). Proportionally, that would be 4000 cases-a-day in Ontario. Toronto City proper tends to run at 1/4 to 1/3 of total Ontario cases so we should expect about 1000-1330 cases a day average here

Population of Germany is 83.02 million (density 240 people per square kilometre). Population of Canada is 37.59 (density 4 people per square kilometre).

Canada's massive hinterland is not really relevant. Much of Canada (where the people are) is plenty dense.

It's difficult to tell from the article whether the entire site was operating; i.e. shops, restaurants, hills, etc. Few would argue that ski hills should be open in their entirety but rather, just the skiing part - no facilities. Minimal staffing let alone in close proximity. However a comment I read about the impact of on-site medical services raised a point I hadn't considered.

At a total of 38 gun homicides for 2020, last year was a five year low. In 2019 we had 51 gun homicides.

I suppose that makes sense with Covid19 forcing the closure of nightclubs, late night strip malls, etc. Let’s see if we can keep these Covid-related gains after the pandemic is over.
