NHL Penguins to explore relocation

Hopefully they’ll have better luck than the previous NHL team located there. Anyone remember the Kansas City Scouts?

It's time New Mexico gets a team. They even get snow, too!

I think the NHL should put several more franchises in Canada, but expansion in the US is ultimately necessary.

The Porto Rico Padres will come before a new or relocated team comes to Canada.

Time to dump Bettman and bring in management who actually care about the game.

KC would be an ideal location for NHL fans as having Crosby and Malkin in the west would force NHL to fix the schedule. That's why it won't happen :D

Hell-there's pro-football in Green bay? It's all about selling (out?) to the Americans.

The only reason the Packers are still in Green Bay, Wisconsin is because the City of Green Bay wisely bought a majority stake in the franchise many years ago. Otherwise, the Packers would have moved to Milwaukee or some other large American city. The city also sports the Packers Hall of Fame, something every pro team with decades of history should have.

Interestingly, the 2nd largest metropolis in North America, Los Angeles, once hosted two NFL teams, but now LA has none! This goes to show that pro teams are not predestined to larger markets and warmer climates.

Best relocation locales?

- A second team in downtown Toronto or suburban Toronto.
- Hamilton
- Winnipeg
- Quebec
- Seattle
- Portland
- Milwaukee

I think the team should stay in Pittsburgh though. They should move one of the southern teams up north.

But Bettman will probably put franchises in Mexico City and Manaugua before agreeing to another Canadian franchise.

"This goes to show that pro teams are not predestined to larger markets and warmer climates."

Larger markets will always be preferred. The NFL filled the Houston market and LA has been on their radar as priority since since the Rams left. The league has always stated that LA was preferred over any new city for expansion. With regards to the NHL, it's the push for new American audiences in second and 3rd tier US cities over several very viable Canadian cities that irks me. The prevailing sense one gets from Buttman and his cronies in NY is that any expansion in Canada over a US market is a step backwards.

Penguins could gamble on move to Las Vegas

Mar 08, 2007 04:30 AM

PITTSBURGH–Penguins owner Ron Burkle travelled to Las Vegas yesterday to meet with the mayor and discuss the possibility of relocating the team there.

Burkle, who lives in Los Angeles, led a delegation in talks with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, according to Penguins spokesman Tom McMillan.

Meanwhile, Burkle and co-owner Mario Lemieux are prepared to meet with state, county and local officials today in Philadelphia to try to resolve differences over plans for a new arena in Pittsburgh.

Elena Owens, a spokeswoman for Goodman, confirmed the meeting with Penguins officials and said, "they had a very pleasant conversation." She declined to elaborate.

The Penguins issued a letter Monday saying the team planned to actively pursue relocation. It blamed government officials for failing to reach a deal to build a new arena in Pittsburgh.

In the letter, Lemieux and Burkle said talks had stalled.

My gawd. Las Vegas. As if the NHL needs another team in a southern market.

The NHL hasn't learned a damned thing.

Las Vegas is the most logical choice for any future sports expansion.

Las Vegas Aces here we come.

"Las Vegas is the most logical choice for any future sports expansion."

It will work about as well in Vegas as it does in Pheonix or Nashville. Yes it will be embraced at first for a few years but then it will dwindle into half-audiences and still considered a 4th or 5th pro sport. Hockey is a winter sport- ice and snow. The northern cities will almost always be the better option for the NHL. It's not the NBA, which is how Buttman has been trying to peddle it it. The NHL is a Canadian League.
