Thought I would share a quick photo tour of my new hood here in Tokyo. All of these are taken within a couple hundred feet of my apartment.

My building: (Oh noes! Hydro poles!)

It's a brand new seven story rental building with 10(!) good sized retail units on the ground floor. So far we have an orthodontist, a hair salon, a day-spa and a silk flower shop. No underground parking. Parking is in an interior courtyard using a 3-level elevator system-thingie. Check out the size of the trees that they planted - there are 25 of them.

My views from the balcony:

At the top of the hill is Daikanyama and beyond that is Shibuya. The tall building marks the start of Shibuya. At night there is a permanent glow coming from the other side of the hill.

An ugly collection of buildings line the main road which is pretty typical. Interesting architecture is always hidden down the side streets.

New construction across the street. I think it's retail/office.

Setting out on foot:
It's a neighbourhood of funky used and high-end fashion, fancy restaurants and tiny, hole-in-the-wall bars, expensive hair salons for people and dogs, bicycle shops, and junk shops. There will be laundry drying on the balcony and a ferrari in the garage. It's very eclectic.

An old warehouse/factory of some sort. Can't see it lasting too much longer.

Great pics. Japanese environments can be very interesting. How are you finding it indense? Is the cost of living as high as advertised?

Wow! This is one of the best photo threads in months! Thanks for the tour, indense. Your neighbourhood is pretty close to perfect in every imaginable way. Is this a socio-economically mixed neighbourhood?

I'm enjoying it an awful lot. There is always something going on. Multiple festivals every weekend to check out. I can wander strange neighbourhoods late at night and always feel safe. When you get lost - and I always get lost - you never have to wander too far before stumbling on a subway station. You can easily hop on a train and spend the day out in the country-side as well. It's much easier to get out in nature than it is in Toronto. I've already climbed Mt. Fuji. I'm trying to pick up the language with so-so results. People appreciate any effort you make though. The girls are pretty and like foreigners.

Apartments are expensive for what you get but I don't think it's much more than what I was paying in Amsterdam. Fruit is insanely expensive. If you want to eat like a North American, then food is expensive. If you eat Japanese - rice, noodles, small portions of meat - then it really isn't that expensive. You can always get dinner at a noodle place for 5 bucks.

I don't drive of course. That would be crazy expensive.

The pay is extremely good and the taxes are really low. I've been cost-of-living adjusted and I pocket way more at the end of the month than I could imagine ever doing in Toronto. I'm afraid of what they are going to do to my salary when I come home.

There are some interesting benefits as well. The company pays its employees' rent and then takes it out of their before-tax salary giving you a good tax savings. The company also pays for your commuting expenses and they are paying for Japanese lessons. I think those are pretty standard among big companies here.

Interesting to see how clean from litter the streets are. High density no litter. Good on them!
