The official colour of the City of Mississauga is dark blue, orange is Mississauga Transit.

Is anyone from Oshawa/Whitby/Clarington here? Do they feel 'special' at all because of their CMA status?

Nobody is asking to feel "special" as you put it. However, Mississauga Economic Development office would love that type of information to use. However, they are currently doing a good job without it. Mississauga is already the location of choice for many national and international firms.

So what additional data exactly does Mississauga need than all the census data collected in Mississauga specific to the municipality of Mississauga? I don't think CMA status will cause any changes to be made to the surveys themselves, so what additional or more accurate data will be collected? All I can think of is that the numbers might be crunched further and then released "officially", but surely Mississauga can do that themselves if they're looking for something specific?

Back to the States: I think the prototypical example of a CMA "seceding" from a larger one was Nassau-Suffolk (i.e. Long Island) in the 70s...

...it wants political independence, but not economic independence...it derives it's wealth from the core, but gives nothing back...

...what it needs to remember is that it owes its very existence - now and especially the past - to Toronto...b/c without Toronto, it would never have existed in the first place!...b/c where would it's population have worked when it was a fledgling community?!!!!!...

...in other words, it has no problem growing and deriving it's wealth from Toronto, but wants nothing much else to do with it beyond that...

...even now (although the share of employment has shifted)...more people 'depend' on Toronto (as they always have) to feed their families...

...but over the years, rather than thank the City of Toronto for all the wealth opportunity it has provided it's residents, it instead now tries it's best to steal companies away from the city that gave it it's birth in the first place...

...just like all the residents who've lived there and worked in Toronto...they've taken from Toronto their wealth and then spent it instead in Mississauga...

...so as far as being seperate, they need to realize that they can't have it both ways...they've never been self-sufficient and/or independent...true independence is about exactly that...be independent in EVERY way!

Hmmm, there is quite a difference between housing in Etobicoke and Mississauga. The newer Mississauga subdivisions have all been built so that the houses look similar with very little variety ie. one contractor was responsible for the development of an entire subdivision street by street. This is not so much the case with Etobicoke

It all depends on where you go. Southern Mississauga is similar to most parts of Etobicoke as the two were developed around the same time. The new northern parts are the more cookie-cutter areas, a lot more like the new parts of Scarborough.

While the 50,000+ people living in what is equivlant to Mississauga today during the 1920s worked pretty independently without Toronto in farming, logging, and fishing. Stupid fact, approx 10% of the masses in the Royal British navy during most of the late 1800s came from Port Credit.

The problem with TO is that they have the cheapest residential taxes in the friggin' GTA and to make up for it they charge the hell out of offices. No wonder they all leave.

Toronto has to get tough with its suburbs like Mississauga, the way Chicago does.

Toronto should annex all the land that Pearson sits on(if we where able to, I know the province would have to allow it). But that is what Chicago does, when the airport expands, they just go in there and take over the surrounding suburb. That shows the suburbs whos the boss.

Mississauga has to understand they are the child, and Toronto is the parents. Mississauga must listen to us, and be glad they are here, because its Toronto that fathered them.

The core, meaning the core city - Toronto - from which the locational advantages of Mississauga derives from. To deny that would be to say Timmins had the same potential for growth as any locale in the GTA.

As to the issue of subsidizing Toronto's social services - perhaps Peel would love to take a pro-rata portion of the urban poor in the GTA?

That's the most idiotic comment I've heard for awhile - easily expanded to handle all of the city's air passengers? Since when did either the Island Airport or Downsview had runways (or will get runways with ease) long enough to handle wide-body aircraft?

Mississauga is more or less mortaging it's future via greenfield developments. Now that they are more or less exhausted, we'll see how low the taxes can stay, vis-a-vis infrastructural replacement costs that are slowly catching up with the municipality. The situation is no more or less different in many ways from the inner suburban municipalities in the ex-Metro.
