March 27 addition.

Then. Beverley looking N. Phoebe street on the left. Stephanie street on the right. Not sure of the date on this one; about 1900?

" The new windows are simply splendid. They are wooden. . . . I was admiring the craftsmanship while I was waiting for the Queen car." QUOTE Mustapha.

The above quoting appears as if you were "casing", the joint.

(LOL)

Well, it took 48 hours but I finally got the joke, JT. "Casing". Casement. As in windows :)

Now a widow, her husband having died, she wears what was known as "Widow's weeds",
aka Women's mourning attire.

Italian and Portugeuse widows dressed in black in our City seem to be rare now. It was so common in years past. I suppose that generation has passed and the new one don't wish to adhere to old traditions.

Let's do something a little different than the usual street scene Then and Now.

It's still so very cold outside for late March.

So let's go into the downtown Bay store at Queen and Yonge, proceed to the 8th floor and visit the very last two "old school" department store restaurants in our city. Take the escalator. Trust me on this. You will arrive on the 8th floor in Mid Century Modern style.

Both close this Friday April 1st, [for redevelopment into Oliver and Bonacini restaurants ] so visit this week if you can.

The Panorama Room became the City View Cafe which in turn was renamed the Bon Appetite Cafe.

Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to make one last visit this week and enjoy that view while I can still partake.

March 29 addition.

Then.

"File consists of a view of the old Magistrate's Court building, located at 5290 Yonge Street, just north of Ellerslie Avenue. Building was demolished to make way for the new Magistrate's Court building. The new Magistrate Court building is now in use as "DUCA Credit Union" 1959?".

Now. March 2011. This building doesn't look 1959 vintage... may we safely assume this is the third building on this site?

16-year habit

Until I found this old file, I hadn't realized how long I've been doing "Then & Now"s.

Habit-forming, isn't it?
