MILLER RE-ELECTED

Maybe he is just recognising that Toronto has the lowest property taxes around and there is no point running to upper levels of government because the city is sitting on a gold mine just waiting to be tapped?

I kind of found his assertion that this election was a mandate to get 1% of our sales tax kind of shocking. I dont remember that being at the front of his platform. I understood how underfunded he feels the city is, but the thought of giving that bunch of bufoons (city council) that kind of taxing authority kind of scary. Sooner or later someone has to be willing to say no, or at least say yes but contingent on reigning in spending in some way. Part of the city's problem is a lack of funding and part is over spending. I personally dont think that demanding more cash as a solution to your budget shortfall takes all that much leadership. To me that is the easiest way out.

It's called leadership.
Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions - Search for ways to guide your organization to new heights. And when things go wrong, they always do sooner or later, do not blame others. Analyze the situation, take corrective action, and move on to the next challenge. That's leadership!

I guess another solution is to raise your taxes - not such an easy way out, eh?

I'm a Toronto real estate owner. I wouldn't mind reasonable tax increases if it meant the TTC was faster and more reliable, there were better recreation programs and better looking green spaces, more infrastructure, more social housing (to relieve some of the homeless problem) and the maintenance and/or improvements of our public social and protective services (fire, police, public health, water/wastewater etc).

Maybe you should have paid more attention to the campaign. This pledge was central to his platform.

That's balanced with the highest commercial tax rate in the GTA.

I guess the other 59% must felt so comfortable about him that they don't see the need to vote against him?

As I see it, if you didn't bother to vote, and could have, you gave up your right to vote. Turnout has little to do with mandate - there can be an argument that if you win a plurality, but not a majority of votes (especially a weak plurality), the mandate may be questionable.

Especially the very weak plurality that Steve has - with a minority of seats to boot.

My Lunch Bag Let Down....

Premier Dalton McGuinty says he'll stand with Toronto as it seeks a portion of federal tax revenue, but the city shouldn't expect to get any provincial tax money.
"I'd love to be in a position to be able to dole out additional revenues to our municipal partners, but I'm not," McGuinty told reporters yesterday when asked about Mayor David Miller's election night vow.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said that he will cut the federal Goods and Services Tax by another percentage point. Miller believes the money garnered from that percentage point - about $450 million - should go directly to cities.

Howard Moscoe reacted angrily today when he learned that Toronto's transit system will receive less than 5 per cent of Ottawa's $40 million boost for transit security......had expected $17 million to pay the cost of installing security cameras on subways. Instead, Toronto will receive $1.46 million. It’s spit in the eye," he said. "It shows utter and complete disrespect for the citizens of Toronto.

Does anybody take Miller and Co. serious anymore? What a wasted opportunity for senior levels of government (in an election year to boot) to take advantage of post election euphoria by lobbing these bomb shells.

billonlogan:

They certainly took him more seriously than they did Mel - who can be dismissed just because of who he is.

BTW, the senior levels of government is not compelled by our Constitution to take the municpalities seriously.

And isn't it obvious that Steve Harper doesn't give a shit about Toronto? Why would he listen to Miller? I doubt he'd even listen to Pitfield.

God help us all.........four more years of pandering to toronto island residents and left wing NIMBY's..................and how can Miller claim a strong mandate when only 41% of of eligable voters actually voted

"There's just as many (if not more) right-wing NIMBY's in this city by the way"

Exhibit A: Karen Stintz
Exhibit B: The truly wretched Rob Ford

Exhibit C: Case Oates
Exhibit D: Cesar Palacio
Exhibit E: Frances Nunziata

And the ultimate YIMBY is the left-of-centre Kyle Rae.
