Mr. Lindsay has been given a clear mandate with opening Eglinton Crosstown as his top priority. Mr. Lindsay will move over to Metrolinx on December 9 to begin supporting the transition process. “With his many years of service helping to build our great province as President and Chief Executive Officer of Infrastructure Ontario, no one is better positioned to take on this role than Michael,” said Premier Doug Ford. “I have given Michael a clear mandate to open Eglinton Crosstown as soon as it is safe to do so. That is his top priority.” After many years of service, during which time Metrolinx has significantly grown the province’s transit network, including the largest expansion of public transit in North America, Phil Verster informed the Board of Directors that he has accepted a new position and will be moving on as early as December 16, 2024. “I want to thank Phil for his many years of service to Ontario,” said Premier Ford. “Phil led and supported explosive growth in transit construction, including the largest expansion of public transit in North America. The transportation landscape in Ontario will be permanently better because of his contributions.” The Metrolinx Board of Directors will soon begin a search for a permanent president and chief executive officer. An interim president and chief executive officer at Infrastructure Ontario will be announced in the coming days. |

Yeah well now Ford’s gonna replace him with some lobbyist lackey who drives a luxury car everywhere and agrees with ripping out all the bike lanes + worse.
Like Phil was a mess but there’s no way we’re getting an upgrade here. I’m not celebrating this news.

My conspiracy theory is that this gives the government a new face who can start ripping a few bandages off things once Phil has left the country, well ahead of their becoming an election. Instead of Ford firing Verster ( which has little political upside, it would validate opposition critcs) - a "neutral" party can make redirections without explicitly finding Verster at fault.
The fact the the replacement is from IO says to me that little will really change in direction, but maybe ML and IO have had philosophical differences, or maybe a good cop is being introduced after the Phil gang had clashes with vendors that reached a point of no return.
I bet some disputes get quietly settled through negotiation on the courthouse steps..
