LCBO Moves - Rumoured and confirmed

I just checked Google maps and it's 1.2 km (sorry to be off by 200 m). The Hudson's Bay Centre LCBO is 850 metres away. Yes, you have to walk both ways (I would have thought that was obvious), but that's true of everything (even the three LCBOs that you say are within 4 blocks of your house require walking double that number of blocks). I think it's somewhat ridiculous to say that there isn't an LCBO close by. I am at Carlaw and Danforth, and the new LCBO on the Danforth is 1 km away from my house according to Google Maps, and I find it extremely close and handy. I'd feel somewhat foolish suggesting they should open another one closer.

Sherbourne and Bloor might be a dead zone, but not because a lack of nearby LCBOs.
 
^I guess its an "experience" thing. As, primarily, a wine and spirits drinker I have never felt shortchanged for choice and my beverages of choice are always around (that is not meant to suggest they carry "everything" but there is a broad/wide selection.

On the fairly rare ocassion I want a beer, again, my beer of choice is also available....so, again, I don't feel shortchanged.

That said, I was actually agreeing with the point you made....the choice/selection at these grocery/mini outlets will be far more restricted due to the small footprint of the stores and the resultant small amount of shelf space.
 
Ontario should get rid of The Beer Store and LCBO. But they also should not allow liquor in grocery stores. Liquor should be banned, imo.
 
Why a LCBO (Loblaws Control Board of Ontario :cool:) Express within a supermarket? Why not within a hardware store (IE Rona) or a automotive store (IE. Canadian Tire)?

Can I get ice cubes at a LCBO? Not the ones I go to.

Gabe: Interesting statistics about average beer prices in Ontario compared to neighboring Quebec,
New York State and Michigan...What is also interesting is that both NY and MI are both "deposit" states
(5 cents per container in NYS and 10 cents in MI-the highest beverage container deposit in the US) and
many seem to think that is one of the factors making beer and soda (pop-if you will) more expensive then
in states without deposit laws...How much is Quebec's current beverage deposit?

This shows how the Brewer's Retail monopoly tends to be expensive being a tax revenue generator for Ontario...

I find it a bit strange that the minimum size of grocery store that these can be contained in is only 15,000 s.f......if you put a liquor outlet that is 20% of a store size in is it still a grocery store? Is there any other item/category in a grocery store that gets 20% of the floor/shelf space?

EDIT: thinking of this further, 15k s.f. is +/- the size of today's typical new format Shopper's Drug Marts....not a lot of grocery stores that size these days....at least not in urban settings.

How to make the LCBO and the Beer Store more convenient:

Have them be the only ones to be able to sell tobacco, lottery tickets, adult videos, pornographic magazines, M-rated games (and AO-rated games), 18A-rated films (and Ontario R-rated films), DVD sets of 18+-rated television shows, music with the Parental Advisory label, and such. Why? They all require IDs anyways.

This would also allow electronics store and major discount retailers to be age-appropriate as well.

An 18-year-old has a much easier time purchasing an adult video than purchasing alcohol anyways, so why not?

The reason why I am in favour of the status quo with regards to alcohol in Ontario is the same reason as why adult videos are sold in separate stores and not in general video stores.

Despite being otherwise politically progressive, I am a teetotaller by the way and not necessarily a prohibitionist.

The only grocery store I can think of in that section of Mississauga is the No Frills (formerly Loblaws) at Creditview and Britannia. If they open an LCBO Express there I will be very, very happy!

Now that's what i call one stop shopping! ;) In the year 2014 the last thing we need is more government controlled stores. That set up would not only turn Ontario into more of a nanny state than already is, it would also cost a lot of jobs and cut into small independent stores profits. What teens buy adult videos? The ones who don't have internet access? An 18-year-old has a much easier time purchasing weed than alcohol or even cigarettes, which are sold in every single variety store.

I want to see competition. The LCBO/Beer Store monopoly needs to go. The Beer Store is owned by Anheuser-Busch, Molson-Coors, which it makes it nearly impossible for their competitors to get shelf space.
