Illuminated Toronto street signs

I wonder if this little branch of street sign technology was made obsolete by maintenance costs, and overall improvements to street lighting.

I wonder if this little branch of street sign technology was made obsolete by maintenance costs, and overall improvements to street lighting.

Clearly maintenance would be an issue and, being Toronto, we would be years behind. The new street name signs are also much larger so really do not need separate illumination.
