This is f**ken hilarious... so these are the things that our elected politicians contemplate when they get together at their caucus retreats.

Ignatieff touts bird that hides feces as party icon

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. – The beaver is one of Canada's national symbols and now a senior Liberal wants to make the puffin the symbol of the country's self-proclaimed natural governing party.

Liberal deputy leader Michael Ignatieff says the industrious little seabird – with its black and white plumage, distinctive striped beak and orange feet – is a "noble" creature that exemplifies Liberal values.

"It's a noble bird because it has good family values. They stay together for 30 years," Ignatieff said Thursday outside a Liberal caucus retreat in the Newfoundland capital.

"They lay one egg (each year). They put their excrement in one place. They hide their excrement. ... They flap their wings very hard and they work like hell.

"This seems to me a symbol for what our party should be."

Ignatieff was charmed by the birds during what was supposed to be a whale-watching tour for Liberal caucus members Tuesday. The MPs and senators saw no whales but did get a close up view of a colony of puffins nesting on a rocky offshore island.

IMO, selecting a bird that hides it's sh*t is definitely not the party icon that the Liberals should be aiming for.

Wow. Funny but pretty sad in a way. Talking like that only reinforces the academic-with-no-understanding-of-general-attitudes reputation that he seems to have earned.

Considering the antics of the Liberal party of the last few years, maybe that bird is appropriate as a symbol.

Imagine if it went as far as currency

I like Iggy. First of all, I agree, the Puffin is the perfect choice, and kudos to Iggy for picking the ideal bird. He and we all know that the Liberals faltered during the sponsorship scandal and the Cretien/Martin squabbles because they forgot to keep their crap hidden. Not that I support corruption, but if you're the one that's corrupt, it's generally a good idea to keep it under wraps. Secondly, Iggy doesn't care, and believes he's above all these plebs in Parliament, which again is great to see, not so much from the arrogance of it, but it's great entertainment.

Well, the Patrician Iggy did support the war in Iraq until he recently and finally discovered what many of the plebes already knew: that this war was predicated on dangerous politics and lies.

Talk about scandal!
