If Toronto was to get a second NHL team.....

If 'Toronto' does, it should be a suburban (read 'Mississauga') team.

I don't think a second 'Toronto' team that plays within the Toronto city limits (Downsview, Portlands, etc.) is necessarily a bad thing. The other major sports have shown that two teams playing within the same city not only works if there is a great following for that sport, but produces a great rivalry. Look at New York or Chicago's baseball teams each representing one part of the city.

Meanwhile, there are at least two groups of financial heavy-hitters jockeying for position to win what is perceived as the biggest prize – a second NHL team in Toronto – both of which have made their intentions known to the league, and have not been discouraged in their quest.

Of course there are a couple of rather large obstacles to surmount: the construction of a new arena, and the territorial claims of the Maple Leafs. But the folks involved are of the calibre not easily dismissed, and they seem to believe strongly that it's only a matter of time until they are given the green light. (The league would still prefer to auction a Southern Ontario expansion team to the highest bidder not named Balsillie, but now may be forced to use the market to solve a more pressing problem.)

that's old news and won't be happening any time soon (ie. next 2-3 years at least).

I say Etobicoke, since it always gets overlooked. You could put it somewhere in the vast industrial lands just south of Kipling station, where it would still be close to mass transit, a major highway, and the ever aspiring ECC.

A Mississauga-Toronto rivalry would be greater than Toronto-Toronto rivalry in my opinion.

A second NFL or NHL franchise is always just a few years away and "inevitable". Don't hold your breath for either.
