how long until toronto surpasses chicago on skyscrapers?

Over a month now and I'm still patiently waiting for all these fantastic new proposals to be revealed.

It's easy to see that the number of new proposals has dried up a lot this year...

LOL, @Koops65

Yes it slowed down from its peak; but I gave you 14 new or updated threads over the weekend.

And psst; something is coming after I've had my coffee.

Hey! I got screamed at on IG by somebody from Chicago for questioning the assertion that it was booming in every way and to deny that was unpatriotic. Whatever! I really don’t care but googled to check my info to make sure that I was not misinformed which is a grievous sun in my books! Guess what? Not only did Chicago lose population in the last census it has been doing so since 1960! This explains why it has such a large rail network but few riders.

Population has been declining. On the flip side, # of households has gone up. Average household size has gone down dramatically.

New year, new numbers:

Toronto skyscrapers - 131 (109 complete, 22 U/C) PLUS the CN Tower!

Chicago skyscrapers - 141 (140 complete, 1 U/C)

So, in the 1.5 yrs since I last posted about these numbers, Toronto has gained 6 towers, while Chicago has gained 2. Chicago has gone from +14 towers to +10 towers. Toronto is still slowly catching up, despite a massive downturn in the development scene.

To answer the question in the thread title, at the current rate (4 towers per 1.5 years) it will take 4 and a bit years for Toronto to catch up.

Thank you so much for posting the data!
Would it be possible (I know it's not easy) to also give Greater Golden Horseshoe number of skyscrapers as well? Most cities (especially in Asia) give numbers for their economic zones, instead of administrative ones. Also, Chicagoland Vs GGH appears to be a more fair comparison.
Thanks again for everything you do for our company of urban enthusiasts and Happy New Year!

You're very welcome. :)

Ok, the suburbs add an additional 24 skyscrapers to the list, for a total of 155. Chicago has 0 skyscrapers outside of its downtown core. The total there stays at 141.

Chicago:

Here are the non-Toronto towers. So far, only Mississauga (13), Vaughan (9) and Pickering (2) have towers taller than 150 metres:

To summarize, the GTA has 155 skyscrapers either built or U/C, while Chicago has 141. By that metric, Toronto has already surpassed Chicago...
