Homewood Suites, Bay & Main (Hamilton. Vrancor, 17s, DCYSA Architects)

Yes, the building is mediocre, and if it were built in downtown Toronto it would be rightly lambasted. Still, it breaks up the monotony of parking lots along that stretch. In the Hammer, that's a +1.

The historic HMP (Hamilton Motor Products) bldg was torn down to build this hotel, despite the sea of parking lots surrounding it (see pic on previous page).

Also, the 'condo building' portion of this development (directly to the left(west) of the hotel) was built on the spot of the partially demolished Canada Revenue Agency bldg (the smaller half still remains, planned to be part of the condo tower).

So in reality, no, there were no surface lots harmed in the making of this development - 'just' a couple historic structures. (let's not even start with the HWDSB Bldg across the street).

However, the fact that anything has been built from scratch, built higher than 6-storeys is the +1 in this story!

It sure doesn't look like the rendering, but it's still looking pretty decent IMO. Esp for Downtown Hamilton!
