Head of Slips (Waterfront Toronto, West 8/DTAH)

As lovely as the bridge is, has anyone noticed (see the Jan 8/09 slide deck on waterfrontoronto's website) that it's not accessible??? Of course to do so would mean designing a more gradual slope and extending the length of the bridge = $$$$

It's not accessible to bikers and rollerbladers, but I believe it is accessible for pedestrians. I remember seeing renderings with people on it. That's the whole point of the bridges--allowing people to walk continuously from one end of the harbourfront to the other.

If you are referring to mobility accessibility like personal walkers and wheelchairs then yes, it is unaccessible, but not everything needs to be so since the overwhelming majority of us are capable of climbing inclines.

Access Diagrams from Jan. 09 as noted above

Thanks DT Geek. That's exactly what I meant. And regardless if the majority are mobile (as someone mentioned) that's not the point. Just raised this as a point of discussion and curious how the issue of accessability was addressed - thank you for the map DT.

I would also point out that Ontario has the Accessabilty for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. Some of the requirements of the Act deal with the built environment:
- accessible pedestrian route(s) or path(s) are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs, scooters, or other mobility devices;
-curb cuts or ramps are wide enough for wheelchairs and scooters, have a non-slip finish and are kept clear of snow and ice in winter weather;

Submitted for discussion :)

From Waterfront Toronto April Newsletter:

Construction is proceeding on schedule at the Simcoe WaveDeck. The installation of its structural steel beams is now complete exposing the wavedeck’s dramatic curved design. Crews also completed the installation of the Glulam Coastal Yellow Cedar beams and ledgers used to support the deckboards that pedestrians will walk along.

Construction activities at the Rees WaveDeck are also on schedule. Installation of its structural steel beams is now complete and crews have moved on to the installation of its Glulam Coastal Yellow Cedar beams and ledgers. This summer the new Simcoe and Rees WaveDecks, will join the award-winning Spadina WaveDeck giving the public three spectacular public gathering places on the lake.

Was on the 510 today and could see the 1st row of planking is 100% in place for Simcoe.

Beams are on site for Rees with all the rebar in place. Concrete should be pour next week for that sidewalk.

Rees Slip May 8

Indeed, these are looking great. Excellent updates Drum!

I was just thinking, we're going to be able to enjoy these spaces by mid-summer with the progress they are making when compared to where they were at this time last year with the Spadina slip. Hopefully there will be no opening delays like last year (photos by Drum).
