and loving the close up as well.

That's the Petrie Building at 15 Wyndham St. N - according to its designated heritage properties sign, this building is a rare treat in Canada as it boasts one of the only stamped galvanized iron facades. I'd love to see this one restored to its former beauty.

The Petrie Building has been the topic of conversation for a while. I remember discussions about restoring it back when I was at uni there, 10 years ago.

Guelph is called the Royal City because it is named after the Royal House of Hanover, which was the British Monarchy house at the time the city was founded until Queen Victoria died. Hanover is a branch of the House of Welf (Guelph) -

Good Guelph pics and tour,Flar!

Flar: Another good city tour from you again! I remember visiting Guelph on a VIA train trip I took in September 1985.
I remember that old stone architecture downtown and the VIA station. Those older homes with the brick and stone construction is the type I like-built to last nearly forever in my eyes. As a college town goes it usually is always good!

This is terrible! When I was in university the mall was basically empty and waiting to be redeveloped, and the arena was under construction at the far end. Almost every student in my urban design class proposed demolishing the mall and creating a pedestrian street linking St. Georges Square to the arena. That would have been infinitely better than the private indoor Disney fantasyland they've created.

^^
I wasn't familiar with Guelph, so when I saw the entrance to "Old Quebec Street" I had the faint hope that they had enclosed and actual street. I was disappointed to see this was no different than any other mall. The stone inside is just a cheap facade. It was completely dead on a Saturday around noon. It would have been cool if they had actual stone buildings with and actual street covered by a retractable glass roof.

also: the Petrie bldg is neat, take a good close look at the metal facade that covers the upper 3 floors and decorations on top. It would be really great if it were cleaned up. Strange how one of the best buildings is also one of the few buildings in Guelph that is in a poor state.

Old Quebec Street is still 100% better than the Eaton Centre mall that was there before.

Never been there, but have read a number of things about the town. I guess that even with the photography here, which is excellent, it doesn't float my boat. I will probably be the only one to take this position, and that's ok.

excellent collection and great photography! I have always loved downtown Guelph - they have done such a great job of preserving their heritage buildings. For the most part the downtown is healthy and vibrant and from some vantage points makes me think of old world Europe...

thanks for the hard work of posting and sharing so many images!

Guelph has more TLC than most Ontario cities. The homes there are fantastic, sooo many have been refurbished to levels that are often surprisingly shnazzy.

The downtown could use a little bit of help, but it's still a nice area. The city needs to keep helping he downtown though, they aren't doing the best job right now.
