Governor’s Bridge Lookout Revitalization

February 3, 2020 • News & City Updates, Ward 11 Updates

Working in close collaboration with the Governors Bridge Ratepayers Association and in partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, the City of Toronto initiated a project to revitalize the Governor’s Bridge Lookout at Don Valley Brick Works Park. A concept design was completed throughout 2019.

The community has worked collaboratively throughout 2019 to develop an exciting new concept design for a revitalized lookout.

The existing original Lookout structure has long been a destination spot in Don Valley Brick Works Park, offering impressive views of downtown through the Don Valley, as well as the entirety of the park below.

This year, a detailed design process will follow through 2020 based on the concept design obtained through working with the GBRA Community. This process will involve all relevant technical studies, design packages and relevant approvals necessary for implementation.

The project webpage for the Governor’s Bridge Lookout Revitalization Project at Don Valley Brick Works Park is now live and available to the public: Click here to learn more.

Some much-deserved love for one of the best skyline views. I shot this in the fall and noticed that people had forged their own shorter path through the brush mirroring this route. these upgrades would all be very welcome for photographers.

More info and a couple additional renderings from PLANT's website:

The City of Toronto and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority selected PLANT to prepare a concept design for the revitalization of the Governor’s Bridge Lookout at Don Valley Brick Works Park. This project aims to resolve issues with the existing lookout that include vandalism and bonfires, insufficient accessibility, vegetation damage, and visitors’ creation of informal paths and shortcuts. Our proposed lookout can be reached via an accessible main path or by stairs traversing a steeper and more direct route up the slope. A series of inclined, interconnected platforms leads to the lookout’s main platform, which provides views out over the city and down into the former quarry that now contains a network of parkland trails.

Elevated and prominently visible from below, the lookout invites visitors to climb to its summit. A palette of galvanized steel, metal grating and precast concrete complements the Brick Works’ industrial architecture and addresses the need for durable, low-maintenance infrastructure that minimizes disruption to the site’s ecology. Recognizing the neighbourhoods that border the Don Valley, water jet-cut interpretive signage directs visitors’ gaze to these residential edges, providing the name and founding date for each.
