WHy do people like you not understand that many of these people were nothing to do with the protests or the march down Queen. They were people who were on their way home from shopping, or whatever they were doing today. There were even a couple of guys who were watching the soccer game and got caught up in everything and suddenly found themselves surrounded by riot police.

Being threatened to be put in jail and arrested for not showing ID when you are nowhere near the security zone (5 metres), is harassment in my opinion. So is being picked out of a crowd, just because you happened to decide to wear black jeans or a black shirt that day.

What we saw today was not freedom. I don't think I can say we live in a free country anymore.

While I don't agree with the arrests of innocent non-violent protesters, you have to understand that this is a standard practice. In Canada, you are required by law to be able to identify yourself (either through ID, or by somebody else standing guarantor). This is particularly the case for restricted areas, such as federal buildings, military bases, sensitive research facilities, and restricted public areas like the G8/G20 zone.

Try entering a federal building in Ottawa without ID. If you were persistent, you'd get the same treatment.

I don't know if you know the region being zoned. The inner zone north side is Front St. Outer zone region on north side is Wellington. Inner barrier west end is York St. Outer barrier is Bay St. The police were rounding people on Queen St. and Yonge St.

As I understood, Eaton Centre was open and so as the Bay. There was even coupons at the hotels to promote sales at the Bay $20 off $75. If people weren't suppose to be in that area, the police should have informed the department stores to close up. And all the stores along Queen St and Yonge St.

I think the issue was that the police didn't arrest people who were armed and breaking the law on Saturday until things got really out of hand. However they were arresting and IDing everyone on site on Sunday who were unarmed and bystanders.

I saw the rooftop version of that clip, which had a little more at the beginning and end, and a larger field of view.
There's nothing to take it out of context... it is what it is.

Seriously, how many times do we need to re-iterate this point? The crowd was doing NOTHING BAD. If we repeat this a million times, will you get the point?

What is the critical lesson?

Don’t even try to hold international political conferences with this kind of explosive ideological charge in the heart of a major urban centre. You sacrifice either the safety of the politicians or the safety of the city.

The idea that this was an effective way to show off Toronto to foreign guests is bewilderingly stupid.

Canadian authorities created a city no citizen could recognize and no visitor could admire. Then, they allowed a pack of brutes to trash it.

ok, lets deal with facts. We have observed the vandalism inflicted by the children in black.

For those upset at perceived police brutality I would like evidence presented. Dramatic images/video of police charging forward or hauling people off does not qualify. I mean actual injuries beyond the odd bruised shin or hurt feelings.

With regards people held in detention - any beatings, any disappearances? Of course not.

I am sure there are people on this thread from other countries who can attest to what police brutality actually looks like. It doesn't look like what i saw yesterday.

That's absurd...

Those kids don't look anything like an officer.. i've seen wider shoulders on a runway model... to be a Plain clothes officer, you have to be a 1st level constable (after 4 years of general duties, etc etc). and then, apply...

If you see how these 'anachirst' move. i.e. the lack of athleticism in the way they ,run, break windows, stomp on cars...etc etc...

it's pretty obvious that they are a bunch of fringe kids with too many childhood issues.

Brutality is anything that goes beyond what you should expect from the police. It's deplorable that you think people need to die or have serious life-threatening injuries or that we need a Tianaman Square type of incident for the actions of this weekend to be considered brutality. For the innocent people who were attacked, detained and so on, the brutality was real, even if you and your ignorance doesn't think so.
