55-year-old becomes GTA's second industrial fatality in a month

A construction worker on a downtown site lost his life yesterday when a falling sheet of metal sliced through his hard hat.

Police say the 55-year-old victim was on the third floor of one of the two towers being built at the Murano Condominiums project site at Bay and Grosvenor Sts., north of College St., at about 3:30 p.m. when he was struck by the piece of metal debris.

Emergency crews rushed him to St. Michael's Hospital where he was pronounced dead, said EMS duty officer Dave Vilijak.

"It's terrible," Sgt. Jay Frosch of 52 Division said of the accident.

It was the second death in an industrial accident within a month in Greater Toronto.

Steven Lundy, 23, of Brantford, fell to his death April 22 while sweeping a board placed over an opening at a water treatment reservoir under construction in Milton. He worked for Kingdom Construction Ltd.

That death occurred just before the Workplace Safety Insurance Board's Day of Mourning on April 28. The annual event, held at Queen's Park for the first time, paid tribute to Canadian workers killed on the job.

The workplace board said 100 people lost their lives at workplaces during 2007.

Members of the Ministry of Labour were investigating yesterday's death at the condo site death throughout the evening.

All work on the site is at a standstill until their investigation is complete, officials said.

The Murano condos are to be contained in two towers described as a "fusion of art, architecture and glass" as designed by architect Peter Clewes. They're being marketed as luxury condos, with a lobby off Grosvenor and Grenville Sts.

The accident was the first of two in the city yesterday.

A painter fell off a ladder in the west end while finishing up for the day. The man was working at a home on Meadowvale Dr. in Etobicoke. He was taken to Humber Church hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The labour ministry will also look into this incident, said Sgt. Kevin Reid of 22 Division.

Poor guy. In a way it's amazing it doesn't happen more often, but still. Sorry, Mods, you can't edit titles, and I messed it up.
