Finch West Line 6 LRT

It trenches under highway 27, according this image..

Looks like a new left turn intersection (from northbound Highway 27 to Humber College) just south of Humber College Blvd.. Have been in that area during the morning rush, and it is definitely needed to help with the single-occupant automobiles going to the college.
 
Eliminating the turn (and one additional signal) makes sense as a reason to trench it, thanks.

I wonder how elaborate this underground station would be, would it need elevators, an employee/attendant etc like other underground stations. I'd assume it would have to be accessible.

I guess they're planning southward extension trenched?

My guess is that it would be closer to the Queen's Quay underground station on the QQ/Spadina streetcar line than it would be to a subway station.

Good point, it would probably have one elevator but be unstaffed.

It would be cool to see a trenched section of LRT with stations like that along highway 27 towards the airport, if possible.
 
My understanding would be that it would be more like a trenched station than underground, so a hybrid between queens quay and rosedale. It would probably be nothing more than an elevator, some stairs, and a platform.

Sounds a lot like the Transitway stations in Ottawa (or now in Mississauga for that matter). Take a look at stations like Westboro or Lees. Naturally though the guideway wouldn't need to be nearly is big, since the Transitway was built with 4 lanes. FYI, almost none of the Transitway stations are manned, and those that are are at key locations with customer service booths.

Being a terminus station though, it will likely have some sort of operator office, with a washroom and a break room.

Since expanded gambling was approved by Toronto City Council for Woodbine this summer, I'd expect to see an announcement about the future of Woodbine within the next year. If the casino plans are anything like the original Woodbine Live! proposal, it is going to be massive. If a large gambling venue/casino is built, I'd hope to see an extension to of the Finch West LRT to Woodbine, if not Pearson, in time for the Casino's opening.

It would be nice if City Council could include "public realm" improvements as a condition of granting site plan approval. And hopefully that "public realm" could include paying for part of the FWLRT extension, or at least the station on their property.

It would also be beneficial for the TTC to terminate there, since Woodbine has a plethora of parking available, which is very underused most weekdays, and could be a good Park n Ride lot. The deal could be very similar to what OC Transpo worked out with the Canadian Tire Centre, whereby a portion of the parking lot is used as a Park n Ride during the day, but is closed early on game/event days.
 
Perhaps a future southerly extension could not just go to the airport, but all the way down to Kipling station? It would in effect resurrect the once-planned Etobicoke RT...
 
The extension of this FWLRT to the airport must be far off into the future, and it really is quite close to Humber College, but it occurred to me today that after the extension down Highway 27 to Woodbine, the route would run smack dab into the Kitchener GO line which also carries another Metrolinx line to the airport..the UPX.

I'm wondering, would the FWLRT actually continue into the airport or would it meet the UPX, forcing travelers to transfer to that line (presumably there would be a new station built at the junction since at that time in the future UPX will be electrified)?

It seems kind of redundant to have the UPX literally right next door and have the FWLRT continue into the airport. Let alone the ECLRT which will also be extended into the airport.

The larger reason to bring FWLRT further west is for commuting to the employment areas around the airport. I doubt that for the first decade of operation, it will be that heavily used by air travellers or air crew - although that's certainly a good market to tap. Improved connection to Mississauga along the Busway, and out towards Brampton, could bring some ridership too. And, if one of the LRT lines, either Finch or Eglinton, carried on to the Malton GO station, it would facilitate people accessing Pearson from west of Malton by GO Train.

I'm not totally thrilled about having a transit hub over at the far end of the Airport Link, as it seems better to have bus routes come right into the terminals, but if this line went there, also, it would create a critical mass for the transit hub there.

I doubt that a lot of people will park at such Park n Ride. All locations easily accessible by this LRT, have ample parking as well. York U, for example, is surrounded by parking lots. For the downtown or midtown locations where parking is in short supply, a trip that involves a car ride, an LRT ride to Finch West, and a subway ride south would be too long and too complex; parking at Yorkdale or Wilson makes a lot more sense.

The LRT will be quite useful for residents who live within walking distance from a stop, and do not use a car. But if you are already in the car, the balance of benefits changes.
