Finch West Line 6 LRT

David Miller tweeted:

1. The Finch LRT serves many of the lowest income people in Toronto. Connects Jane/Finch, Rexdale, Humber College to rapid transit.
2. Premier McGuinty canceled agreed upon, and announced, funding in 2010 budget. If not, Finch LRT would have been running long ago.
3. Province insisted on Metrolinx creating a new procurement process despite TTC design being complete, ready to go in 2010.
4. Province/Metrolinx responsible for nearly all the delays to Finch LRT construction. Some gall to blame others.

#3 is the same reason why the Crosstown LRT was delayed by a year, btw. Metrolinx knew the switchover would delay the Crosstown, and pushed ahead anyways. I wonder how much money that move cost taxpayers, seeing how quickly the costs of delaying the SSE added up.

And, design was essentially complete by TTC in 2010. The updated Metrolinx website proudly says it tendered for design. In 2016. 2016.

Metrolinx is a joke. And the sad part about it all is that there is no one that keeps them accountable since we have a joke of a Transport Minister, who's only concern is making photo-ops and constructing GO stations in the middle of nowhere.

Still better than what was there before Metrolinx. Basically, to take over the mess that Mike Harris left when he transfered funding responsibility for GO Transit to GTHA municipalities. See GO Transit at link and Metrolinx at link.

Metrolinx is fully accountable to the Minister. They are a branch of the Liberal party.

wait but didnt ML sign a contract with Alstom? There shouldnt be any reason for shortages because technically Alstom's cars can be used for the FLRT as well.
strange....

The delay was not in final completion and delivery of the vehicles, it was in the RFP stage as it was put on hold for 6 months while they renegotiated the vehicle contract.

The big question now is will this line ever be built. It would be a useful line and not controversial. I hope the PCs don’t cut it due to it being LRT technology.

Bombardier is/was responsible for the vehicles, but certainly not for the construction. Now the vehicle procurement is sorted out, let's see how ML proceeds with the construction.

If ML continues to drag its feet, then it can't blame Bombardier any more, and their excuse for the recent delay will become dubious as well.

With all due respect to Doug Ford, if he becomes the Mayor can he derail the Finch West Lrt?

Tbh youre being way too nice to Ford. His and his brother's polarizing political views have severely damaged the reputation and the development of city. He doesnt really deserve any "due respect" imo

We don't even know if Doug Ford is running in 2018; and if he does, it wouldn't be easy for him to defeat the incumbent John Tory. Tory didn't yet do anything spectacularly wrong to offset his incumbent advantage.

If he does become mayor he *will* derail the Finch West LRT without a question. I'll go as far to say there wont be a single LRT built if he's mayor and things will be even worse compared to when Rob was mayor.

Doug Ford will lose the election. The Ontario Liberal’s chronicinability to get any of the LRT lines procured and under construction on time, and the threat of a PC government outright canceling the lines are the bigger threats to FWLRT.

I'm actually not quite so sure that a PC government would cancel LRT lines. It's not 1995 anymore: nowadays one of the biggest supporters of any transit project is often the local Chamber of Commerce. Traffic congestion costs businesses billions in lost productivity, and not building transit also means that companies miss out on lucrative contracts. So if the PCs are as pro-business as they claim, they would not be cancelling any lines, except for possibly the Hurontario LRT, where local residents are (IIRC) lukewarm to the proposal. But the Alstrom order actually serves as "insurance" against that happening: there would be another contract to cancel.
