Evocative Images of Lost Toronto

From the Toronto Star Archives in the TPL, a 1945 photo that illustrates the effect that a “town-buster” bomb would have on downtown Toronto:

Original caption in the Star:

The City Blocks is the area devastated by one Town Buster bomb; according to report. This seven-block area in Toronto stretches from Bay St. running left to the foreground to University Ave. at top of picture and from Pearl St. on the left, Richmond St. right. Buildings are from left: Trusts and Guarantee; Canada Government; Northern Ontario with Concourse behind it, and Sterling towers on right.

Pre-Hiroshima, I presume?

Also, an old photo, judging from the incomplete Victory Building, etc.

I was also puzzled by the caption.

I'm also puzzled by the other photo and caption --- College St?
There's a sign in the upper-right corner that I wish I could read.

The Bank of Montreal is situated on the N-E corner of 568 College Street, at Manning Ave.

Looking S. on Yonge St. towards Sheppard (c.1910) where the original home (built 1860) of Joseph Sheppard II can be seen on the N/W corner.

The home became the B.R. Brown General Store (1904) and, in more recent years (1921), became the well-known, Dempsey Hardware Store.

This historic building was eventually moved from the busy intersection of Yonge/Sheppard to 250 Beecroft Road in 1996.
