Evocative Images of Lost Toronto

This is a spin-off from the Toronto Architecture of the 60's/70's thread, where a photo of the fountain at the Rosehill Reservoir was posted. I couldn't find the designer, however I'm totally intrigued by the images I did come across!



Who knew you used to be able to fish there?



My favourite image that I came across - the Rosehill Reservoir was identified as a potential target during WWII, requiring protection.

Running with the topic of civic guards and war time protection - scanned through, and found a couple of other 'high security' locations that were afforded guards during the Great War.

What would be the date of this CNE photo?
Grandstand and Shell Tower are still in place, Direct Energy Centre is yet to be built, WWII bomber is on display in foreground parkland.
And when was the bomber (was it a Lancaster?) removed?

No sign of Ontario Place? but looks later than the 1962 aerial so between 1962 & 1969?

Perhaps closer to the 1969 zone, judging from some of the background highrises. (Another interesting note: the Chevrolet billboard rising behind the Coliseum.)

What was that clover-patterned thing in front of the Lancaster?

And when was the bomber (was it a Lancaster?) removed?

The Lancaster was removed around 1998/99. It went to the Toronto Aerospace Museum (now known as the Canadian Air and Space museum) for restoration. It's now in storage while they look for a new home for the museum.

Thank you for that image absolutely mesmerizing a crystalline landscape frozen '' literally'' in time, these are the moments that make life worth living, to be able to enjoy the emotions that photographs like this invoke.

Yes JT, by locating the block on the west side of Yonge between Richmond and Queen, where a few years after this photo was taken, Robert Simpson would open the first phase of his modern new store on the north part of the block........
