Hydro One has and is doing tower replacement along with new wires from Kipling substation to the north with different types of towers. They are also doing it along the Hwy 403 in Mississauga and the connection in Toronto. The wires will stand wind speed up to 150 miles along with better ice protection as well more power threw them.
They did the hydro corridor north of St Clair crossing Old Weston Rd some years ago.
Hydro towers were built in vacant fields long before anything was built near them.
You still need access to any underground lines with a very high cost to bury them or to add more lines let alone replacing them over time.
End of the day, the GTA needs triple the current power flow over the next 50 years to meet the growth of the area.
Some hydro corridors that been up dated have seen path added to them for both cycles and pedestrians with some greenery.
This project is only a part of the big picture of upgrading for hydro system in Ontario taking place the last 5 years or so that I have seen first hand.
