Doors Open 2006 Information

How do you get to the top? There's no visible signage and the elevator only takes you down, not up.

I asked at the front, they said take an elevator to the 27th? floor. There was a bank of 6 elevators off to the right. There was a sign on a tripod beside them, I was a little embarassed to have missed the first time through. I used the same elevator to get the the councel chambor via glass walkway.

shoot... I know where it is now.. missed it :-(

Next year I guess.

I went to the TD Centre, Carlu, St. Lawrence Centre (you could probably go in at anytime, but it was on the way to the Distillery so we decided to take a look), and the Distillery.

It was a great day. I was really impressed with the SoulPepper Theatre at the Distillery. It's fantastic...really a great fit for the district, and the design works extremely well with the existing buildings. The Distillery District as a whole has really improved for the better since I was last there. Lots of retail and full of activity. It's really a unique gem in the city.

The TD Centre and Carlu were also amazing...it was also nice to take a look around St. Lawrence Centre, which I'd never really done.

My only complaint is that the building hours are far too short.

I think next year they should extend it over two weekends and extend the hours (at least on the Saturdays) to 8:00 PM.

The hours were indeed way too short! I managed to squeeze in quite a bit this weekend, but I get the feeling it'll be a few years before I see most of what I'd like to at this rate.

I was pleasantly surprised by the vault tour at Commerce Court North (I've passed by the door to it via the PATH countless times and had no idea) and I have to agree the TD Centre tour was amazing! By the end I felt as if I should've paid some sort of admission--there was lots to see and the posted volunteers had lots of interesting things to say.

Osgoode Hall was breathtaking, though I was shocked to learn about the 1982 double-murder shooting in Courtroom 4 from their pamphlet. I tried to find out more, but I could only find this.

Did anyone make it to the Cadbury chocolate factory?

Line ups everywhere, it was packed wherever I went. They definatly have to make it over 2 weekends and longer hours. I'd love to see more buildings on that list, modern ones, cultural ones, unique ones and maybe even a few condo buildings. I love to look at condos. Toronto has a lot more cool buildings they could add to that list.

Doors Open Toronto is more exciting an event than Christmas to me. The lines have definately grown this and last year, but I thought things moved pretty well where I went. It's very cool to see people working and attending these events so friendly and enthusiastic.

I actually got goosebumps when I walked into the Round Room at the Carlu.

Natacha Carlu's four delicate, subdued, earth-toned murals, Life by the Sea, Life in the Forest, Life on the Fields and Life in the Village, were perfection.

The murals in Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church on Broadview, by Myron Levytsky, have a bright pastel colour palette and are also well worth a look.

I noticed a nice painting by Nicholas Hornyansky, a winter scene of the old Armoury building that once stood on University Avenue, when I visited the Royal Canadian Military Institute building.

Also, just inside the St. James' Cathedral Archives building, is a large blowup of a photograph taken in the late 1940's, showing that the present St. James' Park was all buildings then.

St. James Park was built as a Centennial Project. Prior to that, it was seriously considered as a location for the CBC headquarters.

The dance students of Opera Atelier put on a nice show on Sunday afternoon at the St.Lawrence Hall, once the warm up act - florid "historian" Bruce Bell - was out of the way.

I didn't think much of the quality of the faux finishes, nor of the office spaces themselves, inside 10 Adelaide East. Why bother opening it?

Is that the Ontario Heritage Foundation? I've been there in other years - you're right,it's kind of boring architecturally/ But it's interesting to see something that has been used as a location in so many movies.

The gay men of the forum met at O'Gradys on Saturday evening. We sat on the patio eating and drinking and chattering for about four hours. We were ten: myself, FutureMayor, BuildTO, Darkstare, Simply Dan, Archivistower, AlvinofD., Chuck100, Jericho, and Circuitboy.

I thought this Doors Open Meet was the best one we've had so far. Compared to the hysteria we faced from one forum member last week, it was such a pleasure to be in the company of adults with diverse views, and a gay outlook on life, and to celebrate the city and learn from one another. And, I think, cruise a bit.

I'm pretty sure the block bounded by Front, Church, King and Jarvis was planned for the CBC. St Lawrence Hall was to come down. Most of the rest of the block did come down save for some buildings on King. This along with the Spadina Expressway fight was the beginning of the movement to save downtown from the wrecker's ball.

St. Lawrence Hall did come down, at least partially, during it's 1960's restoration, because they undermined the foundation and the east end of the building collapsed. You can see the poorly carved replacement capitals on the pilasters on Jarvis.

I've seen photos of the collapsed St Lawrence Hall. Seems someone cut the wrong support beams when they were renovating the place.
