Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I understand that raised bike lanes are better, but what exactly are wrong with these barriers exactly ? I mean I don't ride bikes much but as a driver I feel better with barriers for the bikers
Yeah, I also don't see what's so wrong with them to only see them as a stop-gap solution. I am familiar as a cyclist with the stretch of Lake Shore Blvd W from Norris to Royal Yok in Mimico neighborhood. This cycle path has featured the "Toronto barriers" for a better part of a decade now:

I personally never saw anything wrong with them. They are anchored solid to the ground with metal rebar. They are tall enough to provide protection from most cars, should they veer towards cyclists for some reason (certainly more protection than a simple curb). They feature gaps large enough for access to local driveways and for wheelchairs but small enough for parked cars not to be a problem. And they also offer a canvas for local artists to paint their "public art contributions" on, as seen in the Google Streetview image above.

I was walking down River today. These parking stoppers are just not great. Many are crumbling.

Hilariously, I guess city workers did some patch work here to the road/bike lane and then placed the parking stopper back in place before the asphalt hardened. So, yah. It sunk into the road? 😂

The City clearly knows about this (the orange paint) but maybe reminder to 311??

Got to check out the Harbord Street bike lane upgrades west of Grace this morning while doing some errands. Looks like one final layer of asphalt is needed to finish the job. Wonder if that could happen next week?

The work on the Lower Don Trail is moving forward at its usual snail's pace. They are putting the new stairs at Dundas together like a 5 year old who has got his first Meccano set, did the factory forget to send the instructions?

The Project website seems to have been updated, predictable, with more delays added! What a complete F-up!

The last sentence is a warning!

The previous timelines have been nothing but nonsense. They update it and remove the old versions, but it would be fun to use the Internet Archive to go back and trace all the broken promises they've made over the years...

The City (and Metrolinx) are being equally sneaky with the West Toronto Railpath extension. I checked the website recently to find any updates on this project and found they now claim construction will start in 2026.

From the city website: "A public meeting was held on February 26, 2020, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and was attended by 263 people. A presentation was given to review the final design elements (i.e. bridges, landscaping and community connections) and to give more details about the project and timelines. . . .The public feedback period ended on March 12, 2020."

I was there. We were all fooled into thinking this would happen in our lifetime! Meanwhile, the Gardiner rebuild is done a year early. . .
