Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Thanks to some digging from the Toronto Star, we now know which bike lanes Doug Ford wants removed first. Bloor from Resurrection to Clissold and Yonge from Merton to Millwood. Surprised it wasn't in The Kingsway where the source of the hostilities are.

I'll stick this here though the cycle track component isn't key to the issue.

Cllr. Saxe has filed an Administrative Inquiry about the Harbord/Hoskin reconstruction. Her complaint is that it has stretched on far too long, with extended periods of no working being done.

A further cycling item on next week's Council agenda is a Member Motion addressing the delays Bill 212 has imposed on the Sheppard Avenue East Complete Street project.

This backpedaling of bike lanes in Toronto due to Bill 212 is getting absurd given we already had this happen with Marlee, Jones, Logan, Eglinton, Dupont, Danforth (east of Victoria Park), and Parkside!

I don't think the Sheppard bike lanes even took any car lanes away. I think councillors are reading the political tea leaves and using "uncertainty" as an excuse to cancel as much as they can (even if it was allowed under Bill 212)

Actually, Sheppard east of Bayview is six lanes in parts per this Google Street View snip; meaning there would have been some traffic lanes removed.

The Esplanade bike lane is almost ready.
A little more touch up painting, unveiling some road signs, enabling bike traffic lights at Yonge/ Esplanade and car traffic lights at Scott/Front.

Bike lane talk? Going north up Scott?
Get out of the way.

They could probably remove the black wrapping on the signs.

First accident spot prediction. No mirrors, no flashing lights, no warning signs, no red paint.

Not much room for error when an eastbound bike speeds through the 3 way stop sign and a car inches their nose out.

The bad thing about colonnades. Maybe we could remove that large concrete corner on the left.

No standing but drop off/pick up, Uber, tour bus, Novotel bus. TTC bus stop to the right.

Accessible parking and ramp

One way sign exiting the Novotel.

I guess all the paint is temporary until they see if this works.

The Esplanade bike lanes are unofficially opened between Scott and Church. The signage and barriers are gone. There’s still countless cars going the wrong way down the street, most of which are exiting from the Novotel/Parking Garage.

Michael Longfield from CycleTO presented to IEC on a micromobility item last week and showed a handful of examples of bikes that are in this weird grey area of legality in Toronto bike lanes or cycle tracks. Some of the examples were obvious to people in the know, but some others weren't. He also had this slide, which provided some good perspective. My parents just bought a compact SUV and even that weighs 3000 lb (1360 kg)

Specific to the cycling infrastructure, it feels like council keeps painting themselves into a corner with stuff like keeping e-scooters prohibited and creating a way too complicated system that isn't even enforced of who is and isn't allowed to use types of bike lanes. I mean seriously, who is going to remember THIS. The "Tricycle" in the first row isn't even one, it's an urban arrow cargo bike with two wheels. Embarrassing

Not to mention the third category of "throttle, electric motor-scooter," shown without pedals so NOT an ebike but indicating they can travel legally in painted bike lanes.

Since when?

Sorry folks, basically no progress in the lower Don trail as of today

I was down there today and not one thing has changed since you took these. That truck is still sitting there with those ramp pieces on it. The crane is in that exact position.

It makes you wonder what these crews do on all the days their project is on ice. Collect EI? Work on other projects?

I can't believe they haven't paved yet, except for the bit south of Queen (which also remains closed.) But I guess they are waiting until the ramp is built, so heavy machinery won't damage the new path.

I thought: "this won't be open before next year," and according to the email shared in a another post, that is the case.

A three-year closure to renovate a trail and build a ramp!

Dundas Street Bridge & Don Trail. Still no progress but a different angle.

I walked over to the new rail bridge and noticed that one of the trail gates were completely taken down and the second gate to the don trail was completely open there.

Amusingly and embarassingly, the gate that was swung open had "Danger: Trespassing" 😅

Walked a ways and came to another fence that joggers and cyclists were bypassing with large gap on one side. Signage only on the north side of it.

I snapped some pics and came back.

Personal opinion: it was risky to bring these components to the site so far in advance of installation. Everybody knows that closures in the Don Valley trail system are a joke (in terms of being observed or being enforced), and it’s obvious people have been moving around the site and checking out these components. When installation finally happens, it would not come as a surprise if another delay is caused by missing pieces. Hope I’m wrong!
