City Hall may designate entire city as official tourism area

So no, I don't see this as a good idea. The Downtown core - including Eaton Centre, Yonge Street, Queen West, and Harbourfront should remain the only holiday shopping exemption.

I understand the need for common holidays but as soon as you open the door to making exemptions of any kind the issue becomes one riddled with inequities. Either everyone should close or everyone should be allowed to open. No exceptions.

Also, not to be lost in this discussion, is that many employees appreciate the extra hours of work they can get.

Montreal ran into trouble when it tried to designate the entire length of St. Denis Street as a tourist zone, which would have completely de-regulated store hours. Nearby residents complained, somehow imagining that every store would be open 24 hours and the noise and crowds would be endless, and the plan was killed.
