Church-Wellesley Village

went to flash last night and was impressed....place is very nice inside, two levels...the upstairs is glassed in and you can see who's dancing up there as well...drink prices were not inflated...pretty busy

if i were remingtons i'd be worried....only reason to go there now is if you don't want to pay the $25 membership fee...i bought mine online for $20....

now if i want pre drinks with friends before hitting a club i can gawk at naked men rather than watching drag queens :p

i think the place is going to be very successful

Interesting review! I'm yet to go, and I have no intention of paying 25$ just to check it out, but if the bouncer lets me in to see what it's all about I'd be willing to check it out.

really??? Is it really true? That the people living there would be shot on Halloween if spoted still outside the house?

I've heard some people talking about it,
but I never had the chance to believe it.

Where did you pull that quote from me? I don't remember posting that.

Checked out Flash on Friday night. I went expecting a Goodhandy's-like experience, but ended up finding a carbon-copy of Remmington's basically.

A few things...
  • It's good to finally have a gay strip club in the Village and they've quite cleverly got around the City's "grandfathered strip joint" zoning laws by making this a "members club"
  • The dancers were atrocious. Only one was remotely attractive and none were great dancers
  • The space is larger than you might think from the outside and I believe they've maintained some of the wood-panelled feel of Bigliardi's (not that I ever went)
  • The $20 (online) membership charge isn't a huge barrier I'd think, especially considering Remmy's is $10 cover/visit.
  • The main floor's stage strangely has no dancing pole and probably should have a mirrored backdrop. It's just drywall.
  • There's way too much empty space in front of the stage. It's almost like they wanted to create a dancefloor. However, I don't think anyone is going to dance in front of dancing strippers. They need to put some tables around.
  • The place was only at maybe 30% capacity on a Friday night. I don't think many on the street understand it or are disauded by the fee
  • All in all, it's not a bad place to go for a few drinks, but they really need to fine-tune it a bit. It's also clean, spacious and the staff seemed friendly (same owner as George's Play btw)

St. Marc's Spa (including Grasp Bar) is closing this Monday for good at their current location. They hope to re-open at a new location next summer.

From their Facebook...

It is with regret that after 20 years of proudly serving our community, St. Marc Spa announce its closure at 543 Yonge St. Faced with the option of renewing our lease in December of this year, the owners have decided to move the business to a new location. Our longtime employees and staff are well aware of the challenges that we have faced in these aging premises. We have made every attempt to resolve these issues with the build...ing owners, but they have shown little interest in fixing these long-standing problems. We have come to the realization that all of the hard work of the managers, employees and owners will not solve these issues on their own, and so we have decided to close this location and look for new space.

The Spa will continue to operate for one more week and will close for good at this location on November 15, 2010. We will continue to accommodate our guests until Sunday November 14 at 4am.

On Saturday, November 13, all past and current guests of St. Marc Spa are invited to a free party in our GRASP Erotica Bar. Clothing is required in this separate bar space. This event will be hosted by Amanda Roberts and Daytona and will start at 10 and continue until 3 AM. Enjoy 1990s drink prices while you watch a show and reminisce with friends. This event is for everyone: MEN, WOMEN AND TRANS!!!

Then on Sunday, November 14th, between the hours of 4PM and 8PM, St. Marc Spa will host one of the most amazing sales and auctions ever. Almost everything is for sale, including Old TVs, lockers, sound system, autographed porn star posters, lube, sex toys, decorations, furniture, lighting, shelving, office equipment, fridges, art work, framed prints and much much more. This event is for everyone: MEN, WOMEN AND TRANS!!!

But St. Marc Spa will rise once again. The hunt is on for our new home and by the summer of 2011 we hope to have a bigger, and more modern space to welcome our guests back.

Till we meet again,

St. Marc Spa

Statler's has opened. Again.

Dave Auger, general manager of Remington’s on Yonge St near Elm, says he doesn’t think the Village should be a sex destination in Toronto because it’s not what patrons want.

“I don’t think that’s the right focus,” says Auger. “What I’m hearing is patrons in the Village don’t want sex; they want entertainment. There’s the stigma that all gay people want is sex, sex, sex. Gay people just want a nightclub to go dancing and enjoy themselves.

Oh the irony. Clearly there is room enough for both entertainment and sex.

He's clearly trying to protect his turf.

That's exactly what I thought too. Who wants to haul out of town guests to the sketchy Gerrard & Yonge area at night to a run-down club? It's been an embarrassment to the community for at least a decade but it was the only game in town. Remingtons went downhill years ago with expensive cover charge, overpriced and watered down drinks, awful attitude from many of the staff, bartenders & dancers - many of whom were mediocre at best. Now Remingtons has competition. Competition is good. Good luck to Flash, I hope they find success and offer a more pleasant and fun experience than that dirty dump downtown.

Haha, my reaction to the Remington owner's quotes was the same. That's so hypocritical to say that this isn't what people want and that the focus should be elsewhere. Isn't Remington's a STRIP CLUB?? That's REALLLY asexual....
