Toronto Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport | ?m | ?s | Ports Toronto | Arup

Poor Toronto Star. They really had to define support by narrow categories to not make it sound broad-based. I'd bet real money that a majority of Liberals also support airport expansion.

Only the most staunch leftists would oppose this plan and all its economic boosts.

Now let's see if council actually cares about what residents think.

These new jets will be great for tourism. I have met so many Americans that absolutely love flying Porter. As for noise? I've stayed at a hotel near Pearson Airport last year. Some corporate jets are earsplitting loud!! I'd look out the window expecting to see a 747 and it was nothing but corporate jet screaming past my window! In the future how is Porter going to pick what jets can and cannot use their airport? Now a days I wouldn't want to live anywhere near the waterfront.

Now that a poll has shown overwhelming support for the Island Airport and the introduction of jets I would like to see the media ask those politicians who are opposed how they can maintain their opposition in view of these numbers? Do the views of the voters not count to them?

Olivia Chow vowed to do away with the airport altogether and if given the chance would do so. How can she expect to be elected Mayor when 72% of Toronto residents are in favor and support is highest downtown which is where her base is?

It just amazes me how in recent days commentators have stated that this is an issue Olivia can run on!

My only concern is the fact that we have such a poor salesman in the form of Mayor Ford in this debate.

Why wasn't Ford at the big announcement this week? Why was it left to his brother to come out first to voice support with his inane statement "if not for Porter there would be cornfields out there".

I worry that just like the Casino debate - which should have been a slam dunk - Toronto is about to lose something very valuable thanks to the lousy sales skills of Mayor Ford on the one hand - and on the other hand the idiot politicians on the left.

Porter doesn't have to pick anything. Declare it a restricted airport (like Pearson). And have policy that doesn't allow any aircraft past a certain noise threshold. ATC won't clear violators to land. Airports around the world do this all the time. Some have restrictions just for certain hours even, like night ops restrictions.

It's only in Toronto that anybody would think this is such a difficult task. I could type up such a policy tonight and ATC could implement it in the morning. It's literally that easy.

Got this email via the Porter mailing list about a half hour ago:

Change is in the air at Porter

Six years ago, Porter took off for the first time. Now, we've listened to you and we’d like to add new destinations to our network starting in 2016, such as Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, California, Florida and the Caribbean - alongside your favourite existing routes served by our current fleet.

To do this, we’re planning to add brand new planes to our fleet – the Canadian-built Bombardier CS100, the world’s quietest commercial jet in production, comparable to our current planes.

It’s our biggest change since launching. We’re doing it to increase your choice and affordability. And, with our choice of planes, we’ll protect the environment, boost the economy and make flying with Porter even more pleasurable.

Find out more about Porter's plans for change at porterplans.com

Concerning the extension of runway 08/26, Global news has sourced a diagram of what this extension would look like:

porter-runway.jpg

poerterplans.com has a better one:

runway-extension-map.jpg

This extension would bring the runway length to a total of 1750m (5740 feet)

I don't think it would be possible to extend the runway further west as that would seriously impede ship movement in the western gap.

I'd personally prefer that they extend the other runway to the length required as that would help to reduce the noise impact felt by the waterfront, even if it would require more filling of the lake and bring it closer to Hanlon's Point (clothing optional) Beach.

The Globe and Mail backed the expansion. And now the Toronto Star:

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/edit...sland_airport_makes_good_sense_editorial.html

I am pleased and a bit surprised to see the Star come out in support. I thought the Star was so invested in getting Olivia Chow elected that they would come down against the Porter proposal.

I liked this part about Adam Vaughan

That prompted Councillor Adam Vaughan to warn of environmental risk from “paving the lake.†But the threat posed by filling in this bit of water is hard to take seriously. In fact, Toronto’s downtown waterfront rests almost entirely on lakefill — including the high rises where most residents live.

You would think that a downtown Councillor would know that most of our waterfront is landfill. How does Vaughan feel about the Leslie street spit? All of it is landfill! How does an idiot like Vaughan get elected? What is sickening is how much harm this moron is trying to inflict on the city. Vaughan is opposed to the spectacular Casino/Office/Residential complex proposed by Oxford. Vaughan is opposed to the spectacular Gehry / Mirvish proposal. Had Vaughan been a Councillor during the early '70's no doubt he would have been against the construction of the CN Tower. As long as we keep electing the Adam Vaughan's and Pam McConnell's to council Toronto is destined to remain mediocre.

I honestly don't know how this moron gets elected. He's the left's version of Ford.

Anyway, there is nothing new to add here. Residents are overwhelmingly in support of the island airport and the majority supports a meagre expansion to allow jets. Council is yet again on the wrong side of public opinion. I am very disappointed in Milczyn's views as he is usually level-headed. I will have to voice my disapproval in person, soon.

If by other runway you are referring to runway 24 this would require aircraft landing from the east and taking off to the east to fly much closer to the building lining the water front. It would mean not only more noise but a less stabilized hence more dangerous landing approach for aircraft.

all we have heard on for positions on it so far is from Chow, Vaughan, and the Ford bros. one of them doesn't have any say (Chow), so really the "score" so far is 2-1 in favor of the airport.

Others have come out against. Karen Stintz is opposed. Shelley Carol is against it (even though the hypocrite admits to flying Porter) Gord Perks said he is going to fight it "with every last breath". Pam McConnell voiced strong opposition. The usual idiots are lining up.

All of the Councillors who are coming out to oppose the Porter plan on the basis that it "violates" the tripartite agreement are hypocrites because without exception they have all approved condo projects taller and/or bigger than allowed in exchange for Section 37 money to be directed to their pet projects.

Other than the Ford Bros. I am only aware of another enthusiastic member of council - Michael Thompson (one of the few sensible people on council).

There's a difference though, between what was done in the past, and what is done now.

How does Vaughan feel about the Leslie street spit? All of it is landfill!
More to the point - how does he feel about the continuing dumping there. They ARE still paving the lake (or at least they have very recently - I believe it continues) - just you can't see it, because it's on the south side of the spit.

Brace yourselves for another Canada 3000. I think Porter will also disappear into thin air in a night. I'm sure Mr. Robert Deluce is already making his next almost perfect exit plan while we are discussing technical specifications of jets, how quiet they are, and getting excited about carrots, sorry, jobs promised. Just sad...

A few choice motorcycle revs on the Gardiner will do far more to annoy you than a Q400 departing.

Landing Q400's is far far worse. Whatever manouver they do to slow down caused me to move away from that area (bought in 2004 pre-Porter) when landings before 7am started becoming common.

Gardiner was also terribly unpleasant both because of the noise and the pollution from it (there is far more of that thin black dust living next to Gardiner than in Yorkville).
